		What do you mean?
I don't think it's a sin to acknowledge that the 396 was a great engine. I feel the same way about lots of other non-Fords (340 Mopar, 426 Hemi, 455).
I think it's naive to assume the 390 will whip a 396 simply because of the Ford label. If you do a basic performance build on a 390 and put it in a Mustang, it will have a hard time "whipping" a similar 396 in a Camaro. I think I'd have to give the 396 a slight edge. It would come down to the people building the engines (& drivetrains). It's like Sun Tzu said, "Know your enemy."
I don't want to come across as being pro-Chevy. It's weird. The Corvette is everything I've ever wanted in a sports car, but I don't want one because it's a Chevy (and because it's a rattle-trap).
I guess it's because I grew up around arrogant Chevy xss-holes. I used to spank 327's, 350's, 454's, 440's, etc. with my 302 Mustang. Of course that was before the 302 was called a 5.0 and everybody thought the Windsor was a dog. There was one guy that was the leader of the local Chevy crowd that sold his Chevelle and bought a 302 Maverick when he got beat by my 302 Mustang. It was embarassing for him. He had a shiny paint job, blue w/white stripes and Cragar SS's. I had an old red paint job, with a black hood, primered top, and mismatched tires (one 60 and one 70 on steel rims). I beat him in front of his mentors, and he couldn't stand it. |
