Hi Will, I Had a 396 360 horse in a 66 chevelle, Ran great, had to do constant preventived maintenance. Knew quite a few that spun rod bearing and blew rearends. I'll say one thing a 67 nova with a 350 horse 327 was fast and a 68 dodge 340 swinger was a killer and these cars sold new for less than $2800. But, on the other hand I knew a guy that had a 63 fury slant 6 that won about every time (street racing) against stock BB's on skill, he knew how to race. Ford had the power but elected not to put in their mustangs, fairlanes, or torinos do to insurance costs, and liabilities, we the common folk got a watered down version and the 427/425s were left mostly for racing. After all how many 427 fairlanes did any body see on the street back then. I'd say it you seen one you were probably lucky. Unless you were from the Motor City. Chevy would sneak a few 427s in, but they were rare also. I say their are more hemi's cars for sale now than ever was built for sale new.. To me it boils down to knowledge, skill, aftermarket supportability, and of course money. If you have these at your disposal you could probably make a Yugo go fast. OK, maybe not a Yugo.... |
