Your source was exactly right about the equa-lock units. They were not available with the 427 I know for sure. That was a point discussed in many articles of those days. The '27 made too much torque for the equa-locks. And the good gears were generally dealer installed as you pointed out. I have seen two factory 4.11 installations. This was by data plate documenation. One was a 375 horse Z code 390 HP in a '61 Starliner. The other was a 271 horse K-code 289 HP in a '64 Fairlane.
