first make sure that the balancer is degreed correctly. if it is off then that will screw up your timing marks. second check the mechanical advance to see if it is working properly. with the engine off, turn the rotor by hand untill it stops then release it. it should snap back quickly. if not the springs are not tensioned properly and you are getting full mech advance all the time. third check your plugs to see if you are running lean as this could also cause pinging. if you suspect a worn timing chain, replace it. it is money well spent considering the cost of rebuilding the engine because a valve played kissey face with a piston. but a worn timing chain would not cause an engine to ping, just lose power. as for timing i have found most ford engines like 10 degrees btdc initial and 36-38 total advance(not including vacuum if you use it).
