The 428 CJ detailing article (using a 1968 engine detailed by Bob Perkins as an example) that appeared in the March 1994 issue of Mustang Monthly describes yellow paint remains that "may have been used to identify the block or to verify that it had been inspected when machined". It doesn't provide any other detail, though, and I haven't seen any other references.
