FE bellhousing and block

I have an FE bellhousing which is interesting to me in that the starter cavity is not just a bulge in the casting, it is a deep well, with a steel cap pressed in. Numbers are CSAA-6394-A, and 2J10. There is also a 1 off to the side, and a strange character inside a circle.
Any one know what the purpose of the deep cavity is, or if the thing is special enough to try to sell?
