Nine is the year 1969, e is the month May, 1 is the day, sothe block was cast on May 1, 1969.
On the other side of the engine there may be a casting number on the lower front, in front of the freeze plug. It should be upside down but it may be missing. Ford foundry workers did not always mark the block castings. For example I have a block with C6ME-A which is a common casting used from '66 to '76. The date code which you already have is the way to tell when is was made.
