| casting #'s/engine identification -- joe, 01/05/2006
i came across a '60's? engine in a '55 ford pickup and am wondering how i can id the engine, figure out the year, size, etc. where are the casting numbers/date codes on block/heads, and how to interpret: internet/book? hear from unreliable source that it was a 60's 390 or 391 merc couger eng w/merc front subframe. |
| | RE: casting #'s/engine identification -- Big Dave, 01/06/2006
The only way to really figure the displacement of an FE is to measure the bore and stroke, as casting numbers from the 427 can be found on a 352. Look for the casting number on the side of the block, it should read something like C6AE. This may not be the number on your block, but it will give you a year of production. My example is from 1966 (C= 1960, and 6= 1966). After you have determined that, look for a date code near the oil filter mount, it should be a letter and a number.
There are many Ford websites that interpret casting numbers, and the guys on this site know a lot. Check out Steve Christ's book How to Rebuild Big-Block Ford Engines. Got one myself, and its got some really good stuff. |
| Bent push rods -- Daniel, 01/05/2006
I have a 67 ranchero with a street/strip cam and a 600 holly vacum 2nderies.. its ben rebuilt 20 miles ago and its been parked for about 10 yrs .. Ive recently rebuilt the carb drained the old fuel put new fuel in .. started it up and i noticed a bad missfire and it ran like crap.. after some investigating i found that I had 3 bent push rods and two lifters with the top pice sprung out of them . before i put in new push rods and lifters back in i would like to find out what cused that so it dose not happen again. should i replace just the bad parts or all lifters and push rods ? Thank You .. |
| adjustable rockers -- craig R, 01/04/2006
Getting ready to put my 390 FE back together. Does anyone have the procedures for the intial adjustment prior to start up and final adjustments after the engine is warmed up for FE adjustable rockers?
Thanks! |
| | RE: adjustable rockers -- greg f, 01/05/2006
do you have a solid or hydralic liter cam greg f |
| | | RE: adjustable rockers -- craig R, 01/06/2006
Edelbrock hydraulic cam and lifters.
Thanks! |

bring cly up to tdc both valves closed and tighten down till there is no slack then give another 1/2 turn |

| FE info -- chuck, 01/03/2006
anyone know a good source, as in a book, to get all the specs on FE engines |
| | RE: FE info -- Royce P, 01/04/2006
How to rebuild your Big Block Ford FE by Steve Christ is a good book IF you tear out the casting ID section which is screwed up terribly. It has pictures to help you identify all the various types of heads IE early 332 / 352, Low Riser, Medium Riser, High Riser, late model FE / pickup, FT, Tunnel Port and SOHC.

| Low or medium ? -- chuck, 01/03/2006
how do you tell the diff between low and medium risers? Is there a high also? |
| | RE: Low or medium ? -- Big Dave, 01/05/2006
Well, the difference between the Low and Medium Riser heads is a little hard to tell just by looking at them. Medium Riser heads will give you more performance and have larger valves and combustion chambers. The name Medium and Low Riser is actually from the intake manifold, where a Low riser sits as low as a regular 4bbl intake and Medium Riser sits another 2-3in higher. Low and Medium Riser intakes and heads are interchangable.
And yes, Ford did make some High Riser heads and intake. The angle of the heads on a High Riser is about 45 degrees, way too steep to match a Low or Medium Riser. You have to use the High Riser intake. Also, the High Rise set up is only for drag racing, as its ports are too big for the street and the heads and intake have no heat crossover passage.
Hope this helps, Big Dave |
| Cal-Custom valve covers -- Big Dave, 01/02/2006
I bought a parts F100 and its 360 had some Cal Custom finned aluminum valve covers on it. I see them going on EBay for $125-$150 all the time. Does anyone know when Cal Custom was in business? How about when the Valve covers were made? |
| exhaust cutouts -- Steven E, 01/02/2006
Does anyone have a guess on HP gains from exhaust cutouts on a 400hp 428 running performance mufflers now. I have to redo my exhaust anyway and have seen cutouts in the performance magazines that "uncap with 3 bolts in seconds". Or do these cutouts end up leaking and are more of a pain in the long run. I live in a very rural community and the occasional noise from open headers would not be a major deal. I'm the only Ford guy among 5 or 6 Chevys and am looking for bolt on hp to hold my own. Cam has .592 lift and 242 intake duration and 250 exh. duration @ .50 with Edelbrock aluminum heads in a 69 Mach 1. Also will be running a H-pipe and FPA headers.

| what flows best? -- chuck, 01/01/2006
I want to rebuild my FE and was wondering what cast iron heads flow the best... |
| | RE: what flows best? -- Royce P, 01/02/2006
Tunnel Port C70E-K are the best iron heads. |
| | | RE: what flows best? -- Big Dave, 01/02/2006
If you're going to build a street machine, tunnel ports won't do you any good (it's been said that if you plan to use tunnel ports under 6,000 RPM, you're wasting you money). A good set of street heads is some C5AE medium risers. They also have the large combustion chambers of the tunnel ports and the valves are almost as large. |
| | | | RE: what flows best? -- chuck, 01/03/2006
what are the cc's and valve sizes of the c5ae mr's |
| | | | | MR heads -- Royce P, 01/04/2006
You will find them most commonly with 2.19" / 1.72" valves and approximately 76 CC chambers but there were some made with smaller valves 2.09 / 1.66 and some with larger chamber size around 82 CC.
You have to have at least a 4.130" bore size to use these heads.

i,d also like the c5ae heads and any pre 65 and later heads with a 2.26x1.34in, intake ports...... |
| 390 Mustang GT Fuel pump -- WACO, Simi Valley CA., 01/01/2006
After 15 years of inactivity I finally got the Mustang fired up. Fuel is not getting to the carb, it will only run as long as the bowl is full. I suspect that I need a new fuel pump, the one on it has a blue AC can on it. Can anybody out there recomend a fuel pump? The motor is stock, probably a stock cam also. There is a fuel pump on E-bay, which looks different, I have no clue as to what would be the correct unit. Any advice would be appreciated.
