| New 428 flywheel -- kirk, 12/29/2005
Alright guys, here is my question. I'm working on installing a new clutch and flywheel in my 67 mustang. I have a 428 in the car with a jerico trans. I had the assembly balanced before I assembled it with current 428 flywheel and also a 428 flexplate. Now I have purchased a different setup and wondering if there is a way to check the difference between the two. I still have a external balance flywheel, and the new one is supposed to be also. I just want to be sure everything is all right, before I start to put it back together. thanks, Kirk |
| | RE: New 428 flywheel -- Royce P, 12/30/2005
Any machine shop that does balance work can compare the two flywheels and match up the new one to the old balance factor.
|
| | | RE: New 428 flywheel -- kirk, 12/31/2005
I thought that should be possible, the shop that did the balance before wants me to tear the motor down and bring my rotating assembly back so they can do the whole thing over again. I guess its time to check some other shops. I hardly have any time on this motor, and not crazy about tearing it back apart. thanks, Kirk |
| | | | RE: New 428 flywheel -- John, 12/31/2005
That figures....your shop either doesn't know how to do as Royce suggests, or else wants the $ for a complete job. It is possible the balance won't be "exactly" the same once you find a shop to do it, but the difference should be negligble. Interstingly Smokey Yunick wasn't a big fan of precision balancing as he claims so much oil is being whipped around with the crank, the balance gets "off" anyways. All I can say, is that after balancing, my 428 can idle at 500 rpm....smooth as silk....and that's with a decent cam, headers and twin holley's on it. Seems to me that's a good indication of balancing. Mind you, I do set the idle at 750 for my standard transmission. |

a good shop should know how to mach things up...... |

| 1960 430 T-bird option -- Bruce, 12/29/2005
Just brought home a rust free 60 T-bird. Might Hot Rod it. Anyone know where there's a list to I.D. these heads and blocks? Other than the wedge shape deck like a 409 chevy, is there any way to i.d. one from the outside. I suppose I have a 352, but I'm dreamin' a bunch here. Thanks! |
| | RE: 1960 430 T-bird option -- galaxie390, 12/29/2005
Bruce, You challenged my memory. I grew up in a 60 Merc 430-2v and later we had a 58 Merc 430-4v "360hp", it ran 0-60 in the low 8's as I recall our clocking it.
The website below has a picture that will help you ID the engine. Basically on the FE (352) the valve cover bolts to the head AND the intake. On the MEL (430) the valve cover bolts only to the head. THere's other diffs too, the forum below is pretty good. Lotsa luck if you need parts but the 430 is a good motor as-is, my opinion. Then again, if you have a 352, you can pretty easily "hide" a 428 under its valve covers and make a lot more power than the 430.

| | | The 352 was a much better engine than the 430. -- Lou, 12/29/2005
I've owned several 59 & 60 T-Birds including a 60 T-Bird with the 360 HP 352 HiPo standard w/od. At one time you could not give away a T-bird with a 430 in it. The engine was not used in Nascar because it would not live after 5000 rpms. |

| mustang in hot rod & car craft magazine -- zack, 12/26/2005
did anyone see Bill Fowlers mustang in those magazines? its a 71-73 body style. I was wondering whats up with the shock mounts in the engine compartment at the top of the shock tower. I dont know if there stock or not. they dont look stock. I thought he might have put some type of coilover spring setup on the car and that might be a custom spring pocket or something |

| | RE: my question -- Big Dave, 12/26/2005
I posted a question about the dragsters of the late sixties earlier, more specifically about the SOHC. This is a good site to answer my questions. |
| A few questions -- big dave, 12/24/2005
Does anyone have any experience with a Comp Cams 280H Magnum Cam? How about the 280S Magnum?
Is it difficult to change to a solid lifter block, or stick with the hydraulic? I'm going to have power brakes on my F100 and I was just wondering if it would be worth it.
Also, does anyone know where I can get info on the 427 SOHC, especially the 60's drag racing versions. When I look it up on the internet, 99% of the sites are for diecast models, and that's not what I want.
Thanks |
| | RE: A few questions -- Doug B, 12/25/2005
I switched my 390 hyd to solid. Basically without block mods you'll need to run the solid "Shell" type lifters to restrict the flow to the lifter bores.
When searching for SOHC you can use a minus to eliminate some words. Ex.
Sohc -diecast
you can minus any words just no space between the minus abd the word.

| | | Cam? -- big dave, 12/25/2005
Doug, what are your cam specs? How are they working out for you? I heard that with a solid cam valve lash had to be constantly adjusted, is that true? Is it difficult? |
| | | | RE: Cam? -- Doug B, 12/26/2005
I have a Cpmp 282S with .581 lift with 1.76 rockers. The specs say .022 hot lash, I have been using .018 hot lash. As I understand .004 less is all you should go. Constantly adjusted? I do it once every 500 miles of so but thats just because I do. It's never off my .018 hot lash. Many folks go thousands of miles before adjusting. It also depends on if your screws are tight on the rockers. Setting lash is fairly easy. There are some varying methods. some will set the engine at one or two specic spots and adjust half of the rockers and then the other half. I'm never in need of doing it quickly so I do each valve individually, meaning I roll over the engine for each. I can hook you up with some typed out instructions but they are at work on that computer and you'll have to wait until Thursday.

Thanks for the help! And yes, I would like those instructions, but no hurry, as my engine is just now torn down and right now I'm a little tight for money. |
| aluminum rad worth it? -- Dusty, 12/23/2005
hi, i've got a 69 mustang with a 390 with a pretty good cam and intake. its time to replace the radiator but i don't know if an aluminum rad is realy worth it. i live in Ga. right now but moving to Pa. so summers won't be all that hot. any help is appreciated. thanks for your advice |
| | RE: aluminum rad worth it? -- Royce P, 12/23/2005
Aluminum radiators are maybe 5 pounds lighter. Copper radiators work just as well. Your choice.
Royce |
| | | RE: aluminum rad worth it? -- Martin Micheelsen, 12/28/2005
Royce, If you say there is no difference in cooling efficiency between Alu and copper, I will take your word for it. That does however imply that the car magazines get their facts from their advertising department rather than from the tech dept, which I find extremely dissapointing. I had hoped to gain a safety margin over stock by getting an alu radiator. What is the best setup to get maximum cooling ? (I want to be able to be stuck in the drive-thru for half an hour with the A/C on.) |

| | Alum vs Copper effectiveness -- Ross, 01/01/2006
If you went with straight conductivity, the old copper has a slight edge, however, remember its very tough to compare apples to apples
Most aftermarket alum rads run two 1 inch or two 1.25 inch tubes, for a total of 2-2.50
The .625 tubes of a 3 core is less than 2 inches of tube
Bottom line, they tend to work well because they are bigger, not because they are better. IMHO, although I run an alum radiator that I adapted, I'd go with a stock 3 or 4 core with a good shroud for bolt in ease
