| 351 Windsor -- Steve, 10/05/2005
With my new prop, my engine immediately goes to 5400rpm, the slowly goes to redline, which is perfect for me and pulling skiers (8000ft elevation).
I am wondering if there is any intake/carb set-up I can get that will add 10-20% hp or make torque earlier. I just want all I can get with bolt-on parts. |
| | RE: 351 Windsor -- John, 10/05/2005
A change of cam might help with the low end torgue.....maybe an RV cam, but I'd call Crane or one of the aftermarket cam companies and tell them what you are doing. Boat engines are different than car engines as they run under load all the time.....no coasting on the flats or going downhill. Raising the HP, probably means raising the rpm, which could be a no-no. Boat engines typically have stronger cranks and rods, but there is a limit. Mercruiser calls for somewhere in the 4200-4800 range for max rpm with their equivalent of a chev 350. They also run their prototype engines at full load for an astronimical amount of time before putting them on the market. I'd be very careful about trying to extract much more HP, but lowering the torque curve with a different cam sounds safe...er....sort of...well, I think so. |
| to stroke or not to stroke -- bill, 10/05/2005
im building a 390 for my sons truck he wants to stroke it with a 428 crank. is there that much difference in power . |
| | Depends on how you build it. -- Gerry Proctor, 10/05/2005
You'll have 410ci if the bore is untouched at the factory 4.05".
If you reuse all the existing parts (intake, carb, heads, cam, exhaust) then you can expect about 20 ft/lb more torque and a slight horsepower increase at a slightly lower rpm than the 390...assuming that the current engine is in good operating condition and seals well.
If you use more performance oriented parts in the build, then it's anybody's guess what you'll end up with. |
| | | RE: Depends on how you build it. -- walt, 10/11/2005
if you put the 428 crank in,now a diff flywheel,balancing etc,i agree with giacomo.i loved the trick of making a 406 out of a 428,just for the higher rpm,in a stick car/truck,my opinion,or you can bore that 390 to 60 over(according to ford books)safleywould bee 401 cubes |
| | | | RE: Depends on how you build it. -- walt, 10/11/2005
ps to the previous post,if you can find 406 pistons,428 pistons would be a comp of 8 to one,in that ball park, with a 390 crank ,10.5 plus with the 406 pistons |
| | RE: to stroke or not to stroke -- giacamo, 10/05/2005
keep it 390 and spend your money on good machine work and up grades of the internal parts / pistones cam heads ect you will be more than happy with the resoults.....my 2 cents..... |
| Are these casting dates too close?(long) -- Chris67, 10/01/2005
Hi all, I have questions about the originality of the 390 block that came with my mustang GT. I did do a search but i am still not sure. I think the block may be too close to the cars final assembly. The car rolled off the line Dec 28 66. 1 day ahead. Casting dates are as follows
Block =6M22 (C6MEA-A) Intake=6M22 (C6AE 9425-8) Head1=6L26 (C7AE-A) Head2=6M6 (C7AE-A) Dist=6L20 RH Manifold=6M80 (C70E 9480 C) LH Manifold=6M19 (C7OE 3481A)
I can tell from the dates that this motor was probably assembeld with these parts...but did it belong to my car? Seven days form casting to assembly seems awful short. Thanks in advance for all your help. |

It was kind of bugging me because I don't have the engine assembly tag. That push me in the right direction when it comes time to rebuild. |
| | Very tight but also very possible..... -- Hawkrod, 10/01/2005
My May 3 car has a Feb 28 date code for assembly (more important than the casting date) and I am the second owner of this less than 40K mile 68 GT that I have had since 1984 so I am confident that the original motor was not swapped for another (and yes it is numbers matching). Hawkrod |
| | | RE: Very tight but also very possible..... -- Chris67, 10/02/2005
So you don't think that Christmas got in the way of assembly? I am not familiar with holiday policy and the ford assembly line in the sixties. I do however think that its kinda cool that my car came off the line the week between Christmas and New Years Day. |
| | RE: Are these casting dates too close?(long) -- Raceman351W, 10/04/2005
your block was made 66 intake:66 heads:67 manifolds:67 distributor:? I am a code reader I have a site I go to and find out your code meanings |
| | | RE: Are these casting dates too close?(long) -- Tony P., 10/04/2005
YO RACEMAN, I don't know what site you use but according to my CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT DECODER RING all the parts were cast in Nov. and Dec. of 1966 AD. Yes some have 1967 engineering numbers but the casting date codes are all 1966. |
| | | | Yes, Tony is correct, Raceman351W is wrong -- Hawkrod, 10/05/2005
Raceman, you are decoding the engineering number not teh date code. For example the distributor is 6L20 which is November 20th 1966 which would be correct for a 67 as 1967 production started in July of 1966 model years do not equal calender years. Hawkrod |
| | | | | RE: Yes, Tony is correct, Raceman351W is wrong -- Chris67, 10/05/2005
Thanks guys, I already knew the dates...I just was'nt sure about the timeline. I will probably store this block and get a different one to "play" with. Heck I might even start slowly collecting those NOS parts and put this thing back together the right way some time. (limited budget at the moment)
PS: I also realize the limited budget and an FE to "play" with are kinda mutually self exclusive but I gotta set SOME priorities!! |

| 67 390 rocker arms & shafts -- davis, 09/30/2005
i'm looking to get adjustable rocker arms for new Edel heads. After looking at the Big Block Rebuild book, i'm not sure which ones to get. Rocker shaft with diagonal slots on bottom? early 58 style? thanks |
| | RE: 67 390 rocker arms & shafts -- raycfe, 09/30/2005
Same shafts and stands as you have now. The rockers are the different. If you bought shafts with different stands I would just use your old ones, if the high is in question. |
| | | Probably should get end support stands too. -- Royce P, 09/30/2005
No doubt you will eventually break a rocker shaft unless you use some aftermarket beefy end rocker supports. The ones from Precision Oil Pumps are on Ebay always. They fit the Edelbrock heads with stock type adjustable rockers and are the same height as the stock stands.
You will also need ball and cup pushrods instead of the ball / ball type your engine has right now.

| | | | Royce....Precision Oil Pumps -- John, 10/03/2005
Royce....I found Precision Oil Pumps' website. All they have is oil pump stuff. But you are right.....on E-bay the sell end support stands....and other FE stuff. And their stands and other stuff look exactly like FPP's stuff. Both companies are in California. Have you or anyone else, ever dealt with Precision Oil Pumps? I have dealt with FPP, and although they make excellent products, their mail order customer support/service is the shi....er....is crappy, to say the least. |
| | | | | RE: Royce....Precision Oil Pumps -- Fairlaniac a.k.a. Doug Bender, 10/05/2005
I have Precision Oil Pumps End Stands, Center Stands, Billet Spacers with OEM rockers. I am talking with Doug G. of P.O.P. about purchasing his design of ball/ball roller rockers. I love his stuff and it works and does the job well. |
| | | | | | RE: Royce....Precision Oil Pumps -- Scott Allard, 10/10/2005
Howdy. Another vote in favor of Doug at Precision Oil Pumps. I'm running one of his oil pumps, custom oil pump drive shafts, rocker end stands, and rocker studs. All went great! - Scott |
| | | | | RE: Royce....Precision Oil Pumps -- Royce P, 10/05/2005
Doug Garifo used to work at FPP and made the same parts while he was at FPP. You will find Doug to be great to deal with. I have a lot of his products in my FE's.

| 390 -aluminum heads -- jonah, 09/29/2005
I bought a 390 motor and was told it had a 427 noduler crank and 40 over i am looking to buy aluminum heads what do i need to know when buying these |
| | 427 Nodular Crank -- Wayne K., 09/29/2005
So how do you tell the diff between a "427 Nodular Crank" and a 390 Nodular Crank? They're both cast cranks & both 3.78" in stroke right? Same-same. Unless it's the infamous "Cast-Steel" some companies scam onto customers. Seriously, and sorry, if it's really a cast 427 crank there is no benefit whatsoever over a standard 390 crank. And if you're looking for aluminum heads call Summit and order the Edelbrock RPM heads. Preferably bare so you can have the machine shop build them better than they come fully assembled from Edelbrock. Your call. Some companies offer "Stage 1 RPM heads, Stage 2 RPM heads" etc, but that's more $ to spend. All depends on your level of cashflow.
You will probably get better responses from others here who are far more knowledgable on this stuff than I though.

i just wanna say i agree with all wayne said, except for calling summit. please support your local speed shop when possible. i work in a speed shop here in the bay area and we can in most cases meet or beat the the devils ( as we call them here) pricing here, plus give you way better service and support after the sale. we are a dying commodity just 'cuase when you buy it there but only come to me for service well, that doesnt work very long. |
| | | | Yes, support your local Speed Shop. -- Wayne K., 09/29/2005
The PROBLEM is that they are closing doors at a record pace (thanks to places like Summit).
My local speed shop closed it's doors a couple of years back so now my 2 options are to drive clear across town (and the Phoenix metro area is BIG) and pay more than Summit, plus pay taxes (8%) on top of that. Or I can call Summit who price matched another online company and sold me a bare set for well under $900.
But I do wish my local speed shop was still here, even if they only carried mostly Chevy stuff. I miss the old days when you had Super Shops to make fun of...

| 428Cj with c6... total weight? -- Peter M, 09/28/2005
Anyone know off hand the combined weight of a fully accessorised 428cj with C6 attatched? Engine is exact to factory in appearance. I'm looking into buying an engine leveling lift set to install the 428cj into my Mach 1. I need to know the combined weight so as to get the correct capacity for the engine lift? The one i have seen are 1250 Ilbs, is this enough?
Thanks! Peter |
| | Yes, that's enough. -- Gerry Proctor, 09/28/2005
I don't know the exact weights but a dressed iron intake FE is around 750lbs. A C6 with converter probably around 150lbs.
I don't know of any gasoline automotive engine that those levelers won't handle with a comfortable margin. |

Make sure you get a name brand one and not a cheap one. The Eastwood engine leveler won't reach the front and rear head bolts you have to use the intake bolts. Myk's adjustable carb plate worked great on my CJ. http://www.myks-tools.com/anipivotaction.html |
