| GT390 Build -- Jerry, 12/17/2005
Looking for ideas on putting together a fairly tame 390 for my 1966 Fairlane GTA. I would like to keep stock engine appearance and good idle characteristics. I'm starting with a bare BLOCK that will need to be bored 30 over, a bare set of C6AER heads and a aluminum ford PI intake. The rest I will need to accumulate based on suggestions. Keep in mind I am not trying to set any land speed records and I have a tight budget. |

Good idea Ray. I'll post there also. |

Jerry, The PI intake is about the best you can get. It doesnt cost you any low end {I've clocked it vs the stock iron lowrise) and they are great on top, see the old Ford Muscle Parts books - still hard to beat. We ran both the GT/CJ cam, c6oz-b and the c8ax-c cam (same grind as the 429 CJ), either one would be good in a Fairlane and idle is ok, a litle "lump" with the c8ax-c. Add the CJ valves to those c6ae-r heads and clean the exhaust ports out. Obviously run headers if you can, the stock manifolds will cost you about 20hp.
The best way to add power is still to add inches - see how thick your walls are - can you bore it and make a 428? Much better to start with that if the block is thick enough.
For a solid cam in the Fairlaine, the COmp 282S would be good but then it wont sound stock any more.
Even at 9.5 CR or so for pump gas you should make 380-410hp if you do this stuff, good luck. |
| Carter AVS -- Bruce, 12/15/2005
I found a Carter AVS 4V carbureator in my garage and was wondering if someone could give me some info on it.
Carter AVS # on base J8 4618S Tag # 4618S 2708 81
Would this work on a mild 390? Where would I find a rebuild kit for it? Is it worth doing anything with?
Thanks for any info |
| engine bay mods to fit 429 -- Shane Eastburn, 12/15/2005
Can someone please elucidate the prescribed mods neccessary to fit a 1969 429 C6 combo(out of a squire) into a 1969 Mach 1(originally a 390 C6 combo car). Please include suspension mods(front and rear) as well as shock tower mod dimensions/cross member changes, etc. Thank you very much for your words. Shane |
| | RE: engine bay mods to fit 429 -- Dano, 12/15/2005
In my experience, the 429 will fit between non big block Mustang shock towers but won't fit the big block Mustangs reinforced shock towers. I think you would have to do some pretty major butchering. Original big block mustangs are worth keeping intact. Building an FE is more expensive but worth it in the long run. In my opinion anyway. |
| | RE: engine bay mods to fit 429 -- chuck, 12/15/2005
I was able to get by with just shaving about a half inch off the top of the reinforcement for the tower, had to also mod the engine mounts that were supposed to work from mustangs unlimited, power brake boosters wont fit, fan shroud is different |

| 427 FE balancing question. -- Eddy, 12/11/2005
I purchased a 427 side oiler long block. The guy I bought it from told me it was punched and stroked but didn't have many details. He gave me a crank spacer with a counterweight on it and said I had to have it. Do 427's have counterweights? I thought they were internally balanced. I put a 0 balance flywheel and harmonic balancer on it also. I am now concerned that they might have put a 428 crank in it which I believe is externally balanced. Did they use a counterweighted spacers on a 428? Not knowing exactly what I have, I think I am going to tear it down and have it balanced to be sure. I hate to, it really runs strong in my 67 fastback.

| | RE: 427 FE balancing question. -- giacamo, 12/11/2005
maybe it has a 391 truck crank, the 391 truck crank is externel balanced hase the same stroke as a 427 and would requer some tipe of external weights for balance, ive sean them used befor the frount snout would of ben turned down to the standerd fe size and the rear flange thined and bushed to the standerd fe size also .maybe somthing to think about wen you tear it down? |
| | | Could it be a 454? -- Dano, 12/13/2005
If I remember correctly, if you put a 428 crank into a 427 you get a 454 due to the bigger 427 bore. Maybe the rotating assembly is a externally balanced 428. A 454 FE would definatly make your 67 fastback go! |
| | | | RE: Could it be a 454? -- salid, 12/18/2005
sounds like the "hatchet" spacer from the 428 SCJ. This weight is needed to balance the extra weight of the Lemans rods. If you have it in your 'stang and it runs strong with no obvious vibrations, then don't take it apart, it is ok. If it was not right, I think you'd have a very obvious vibration that would have preventing you from ever knowing that it runs strong.
What did you use for the top end, heads and headers. Did you strengthen the shock towers with something like what Ford put in the 68 CJ cars? You may want to consider this before you enjoy the front end right out from under it. There used to be a guy in Salt Lake that sold an after market version of that support. |
| 460 piston help -- gerardo, 12/11/2005
I recently purchased a 460 block that I hope will soon go in a mustang. I bought some pistons for a 429 block, they are .080 over, and I was wondering if they would fit in the 460 block. I was originally going to get a 429 but went 460 instead |
| | They will fit but won't work..... -- Hawkrod, 12/11/2005
The 429 and 460 are the same engine except for two things, pistons and crank. If you have a 429 and want a 460 just buy a crank and a new set of pistons and your done. The piston pin is machined in a different location to allow the use of the same rods and bore size. The only way you can use those pistons is with a 429 crank or a custom set of rods. Hawkrod |
| Casting Number Check -- Jerry, 12/10/2005

| '61 ranchero diff -- 2slo, 12/10/2005
hi all! - wondering if anyone can help me identify the diff on my recently acquired '61 ranchero: It does not seem to be the standard 7-1/4" rear, and I can't find a ford ID plate on it: viewed from the back of the car it seems fairly hefty, with a symmetrical, octagonical arrangement of 8 bolts (accessible from the BACKSIDE) but with an off center lump, like a 9" (I think). The vin # sez AXLE-"J" which I've seen identified on a 1964 galaxie vin plate as an "Equa-lock" although this still doesnt tell me the ratio, and I've never seen one to know if this I.D. is correct. ...any ideas, any body? thanx -2slo |

Please advise me how many 1969 Mach 1 Mustangs had 390 engines. |
| | RE: 1969 Mach 1 390 -- raycfe, 12/10/2005
Sportroof production numbers with 390 S code; 4,665 with C6, 3891 with wide ratio 4sp, and 881 close ratio 4 speed. from "Mustang by the numbers" |
| | | RE: 1969 Mach 1 390 -- Juan, 01/02/2006
I have a 1969 Mach 1 390 with a 4 speed. Where do I look to find out if it's a S code, wide ratio or close ratio. |
| | | | RE: 1969 Mach 1 390 -- raycfe, 01/03/2006
The door tag transmission code is "5" for a wide ratio (2.78) first gear, or "6"for a close (2.32). The Transmission tag info I have is RUG-AD1 390ci close ratio, RUG-M3 390ci wide ratio. Check the transmission tag to be sure. Hope this helps. Ray |
