| i'vr had enough of flatlander racing, -- glennz, 07/08/2004
started my order on june 10th for my erson rockers and related valve train parts, they seldom return e-mails and hard to reach on the phone and when you do they say "i will call you back", and never do
i emailed them several times, about my order, then called, they lost the order, then next night e-mailed me with a question about order, left hand does not know what right hand is doing...
finaly today i got all of the order , guess what, the specific question they wrote and asked me about, was put to the way side, they asked me application, i said edelbrock heads on a 390 with erson roller rockers, the push rods they sent me were 1 " to long, and when i called them, their reply was the right ones will not be in till end of month,
summit racing had all parts in stock ready to ship but i thought i would give flatlander a try, all here seem to think highly of them
i really do not think they know what is going on, most parts are shipped from elsewhere and they have very little stock, when you call for tech question they put you on hold for 10 minutes so they can call the manufacturer...
WHAT A WASTE OF TIME...
there now i can breathe again, thanks for listening

someone form their company must frequent this site, day after i wrote this thread, got an e-mail to get me my push rods sooner... even though it is still going to take a week, because they will not just drop ship them to me, it must goto them first then to me, you would think with the problems i have had with them the would next day them, not only did i have to pay return shipping on the wrong parts, i am expecting to see a shipping charge on the new ones, they still treated me with an attitude on the phone, like it was my fault i got wrong parts and i shouldn't complain waiting a month to get parts,
like stated summit had parts in house ready to ship and then i get an attitude from a small company like them, like they are the only ones that sell these parts
very unprofessional, i guess i didn't spend enought with them $1000 dosen't buy you much respect anymore... |
| | | | RE: They Sound Great compared to FPP ......[N/M] -- Ian Dobson, 07/13/2004
Well I ordered about $4000.00 worth of parts from Summit Racing and I was missing 1 Pushrod (a $9.00 part) I emailed them and asked them to ship me another one and the response said and I quote "Oh, we only sell them in sets, you will have to contact comp cams directly and order a new one".. I couldn't believe my eyes!
I explained to them on the phone that I would gladly ship all $4000.00 worth back and pay the shipping approx $200.00 and reorder all of it from someone else if I didn't get my $9.00 pushrod. Needless to say I have my other pusrod, took 3 weeks to get it though, but I didn't need it in a hurry anyway. |
| | | | | Summit -- Robert, 07/13/2004
Summit has always been great to me.
I think I would probably have just ordered another set of pushrods and returned the set that was short for a refund, but that's me.
I got a set of pistons on time that appeared to have been returns had some minor damage to one which I could have cleaned up but felt I should not have to. I got ZERO lip about another set, and they paid the shipping for both the return and the new set.
Just my experience.
There a guy at the truck website that I no longer frequent, that had SIGNIFICANT issues with Flatlander.
FWIW, YMMV and so forth |
| | | | | | RE: Summit -- Ian Dobson, 07/14/2004
Summit were good about sending a replacement, its just the idiot that was responding to customer service emails should probably seek a new line of work :)
I just ripped into them as soon as I got someone on the phone cos I was pi$$ed at the email. If I had just have called them up I'm sure that my conversation would have gone much smoother :)
|
| | | | | | | RE: Summit -- glennz, 07/14/2004
you are exactly right, phone convo's with them are near flawless, my whole point on this thread was, everyone pisses and moans about people buying from summit racing, so i went with flatlander, what took them a month to get, summit would have had to me within 48 hrs and this customer car would have been gone and the next one in, so i sit with a customer car in shop for last 2 1/2 weeks torn apart waiting for parts, i ordered parts 1 1/2 weeks before tearing apart car because they said my order was being processed the very next day, 31 days later i finally get parts, then i get wrong parts, THEN get an attitude from them because i am asking about wrong parts, by know i am getting a little pissed and they could really give a CRAP....i would have at least expected them next daying my pushrods to me BUT NO.. first they have to goto flatlander from crower, then shipped out to me, talk about a waste of time, so what should be 1 or 2 days for pushrods will now be near 10 days... IDIOTS, on top of that i didn't even get responses to my calls or e-mails until i posted the fist message on this thread...GO FIGURE |

| Custom tires for my '66. -- Matthew, 07/07/2004
I currently have a set of 14 inch 225/70 BF Goorich tires on my '66 coupe. I was wanting to make the rear tires a little wider and taller, but I'm not sure what size to get. I would like to keep the 14 inch wheels. I also have air shocks to install. Any idea what size would be the best? Thanks a lot!! |
| My 390 wont start. It was surging at idle, and -- Steve M, 07/07/2004
My 390 was surging at idle and running rich, so I had my holley 650 rebuilt. It didnt fix the problem. I then put new plugs, plug wires, points, condenser and distributor cap on it. It still wont start. I checked the points with a dwell meter and it is right on the money. Any suggestions. It starts but you have to keep the gas to the floor and it sounds like a 4 cylinder on drugs.... |
| | RE: My 390 wont start. It was surging at idle, and -- Tony P., 07/07/2004
Sound like it jumped timing. Bring the timing mark up to TDC on the compression stroke, your rotor should be pointing at #1 cyl. If not either the timing chain jumped or the pin in the distributor drive gear might be sheared. |
| | | RE: My 390 wont start. It was surging at idle, and -- Steve M, 07/08/2004
Thanks. I will check that in the morning. I hope the timing is off because this weekend is the engines 1 year birthday and I only put about 500 miles on it. My wife will kill me if I take up the whole garage again until to do a motor transplant.. |
| | | | RE: My 390 wont start. It was surging at idle, and -- giacamo, 07/09/2004
i would not think timeing with 500 miles on it? i,d still think it,s the carb did the guy rebilding the carb install a new power valve in it ? is the floats set right ? is the neadel sticking open making it flood ? did the carb guy use a holly carb kit and not a after market junker kit? is the fuel pump relief sticking and making to much presser and blowing the carb neadel open? making it flood? is the floats floating?i,d check the carb out real close? |
| | | | | Giacamo, you got it right -- Steve M., 07/09/2004
It was the carb. We put on a different carb and it started right up. We used the holley rebuild kit and we took it apart again and re-checked everything. It still ran way too rich, so I went out and bought an edelbrock performer carb. I bolted it on and it started right up. I like the carb, it runs smoother, but I am missing a lot of torque off of the line. Any kind of adjustment I can do to fix it? That holley I had would make that car jump off the line, now this edelbrock smooths everything out. It seems like the torque curve changed because I think I gained a little bit on the top end. |
| | | | | | RE: Giacamo, you got it right -- giacamo, 07/10/2004
steve on the edelbrock carb i don,t know much about them for tuning but a lot of fe,s have went to them, and seam to have good resolts with them, i still run the hollys and have good luck with them, i have a sht load of holly parts to pick from witch makes it nice, and problie some day will go to the carter afb edelbrock styal carb.wen my parts run out........ |
| | | | | | | E-brock tuning -- Martin Micheelsen, 07/11/2004
Tuning an e-brock is actually easier and less messy than on a Holly. The jetting is the combination of the jet and a two-stage rod that goes through the jet. The two-stage rod's place in the jet is controlled by the vacum present and a counter-spring. I.e. you step on the gas, the vacum drops, the spring pops up the rod so that the thin part of the rod is in the jet allowing more fuel through - instead of the powervalve on a Holly. This version does not rot or blow out like powervalves do.
From Summitt, Jegs and others you can purchase a calibration kit that will allow you to swap out jets, rods and springs - without even having to take the carb bowl cover off.

| | | | | | | | RE: E-brock tuning -- Steve M, 07/11/2004
That sounds easy enough. If I want more torque off the line, should it be richer or leaner?
|

that,s a judge ment call some like it rich some like it lean? i,d try riching it up at first,,,,, |

| Ethics -- John, 07/05/2004
This is a question to ask for opinions on options for restoring an extensively rusted car.It is a 1964 galaxie 500 R-code 427 car. The car is mostly complete with the exception of the original longblock, the main body shell will require major rust repair ie.the roof, quarters, rockers, kick panel area, floor pans and trunk all needing repair to some extent. The rest of the body panels including the original doors being in suprisingly good condition. The original frame including the rearend, suspension, transmission, clutch parts, transistor ignition, high oil temp warning system, shifter are all present and restorable. The question is for the main body shell.I have seen a 64 body that is advertised as a body in white that was supplied to one of the racing teams back in the day and never used.It has no VIN stamped on the tags and has never been assembled as a complete car.Would it be acceptable to use that body as a replacement shell for my car?The other option would be to replace just about every major portion of the body except for the cowl firewall area. What are some opinions on the ethics of both options? Thanks |
| | RE: Ethics -- John, 07/05/2004
P.S. If anyone is wondering the cause of the rust damage, the car sat in a field for approx. 30 years being the home of mice and rats. They built nests in the roof behind the headliner in the seats and in behind the kick panels. |
| | | RE: Ethics -- giacamo, 07/05/2004
depends on what your state D.O.V regester has to say?some states just go by frame numbers and consider all body as replacement on full frame autos but unibody tipe autos are a diferent story, and things get tricky i,d call the DOV in your state, and ask i,d think if you represented the new body as a replacement part for your project and had the paperwork on the frame things might go right for you, but i,d make shure i had all my ducks in a row, befor i spent my bucks. |
| | | | RE: Ethics -- Martin Micheelsen, 07/06/2004
As long as you comply with the laws in your state and don't hide the switch from anyone I don't see an ethics problem. With the amount of time and money you will save on bodywork, you can probably afford to have a consultation or two with an attorney if needed, so that you know that you are acting in good faith. |
| | | | | RE: Ethics -- Travis Miller, 07/06/2004
Ethics or not, there are a lot of high dollar "restorations" of all makes that saved money via of a simple body switch. Legal? Probably not but this practice has put big bucks in the pockets of many. They just make sure they start off with two legal cars. One of them just gets scrapped out. |
| | RE: Ethics -- gene simmons, 07/06/2004
id say use the better shell and move the tags over, the less the dmv knows the better off u are. you are not doing anything wrong in my opinion. all u are doing is replacing a part that needs to be replaced, just as a tire wears or a ball joint, in this case it's just a bigger part. |
| | | RE: Ethics -- Martin Micheelsen, 07/06/2004
I don't know the applicable laws, but as soon as you have done something, you cannot tell people about, you face potential trouble.
Approx 1 in 60 americans are felons. Some are hardcore criminals, but a great many are regular people who took a shortcut, they shouldn't have taken and had no idea that they later could be facing felony charges.
Once people have been charged with a felony and learned about the harshness of the mandatory sentencing guidelines - 95% of them plead guilty to a charge agreed upon rather than taking their chances in court, where more charges can be piled on.
Good defense attorneys cost approx $400/hour + all expenses paid.
So I strongly recommend that you only do things that can stand scrutiny in broad daylight and wish you the best with your project. |
| | | | RE: Ethics -- Travis Miller, 07/06/2004
If you are worried about ethics you could always sell the car to someone else who will then rebody it and have an "original" R-code Galaxie for themselves.
In the confines of a garage, do you actually think panels are cut off a perfectly good rust free body to repair a rusted out hulk? Get real. The only cutting done is where the serial numbers go. Most restored factory racecars led a rough life in their early years. This type of "facelift" is common in the restoration game. It is just rarely spoken about in open conversation. Two legally titled cars enter the garage and one restored one emerges. The other is cut up, scrapped out, and the title is turned in showing the second car was junked. End of deal. Another rare musclecar is saved. |
| | | | | RE: Ethics -- John, 07/07/2004
Thanks for the opinions, they have been helpful,it sounds to me like so long as I don't try to pass the car off as all original and am upfront about the car having had extensive rust repair, then it would be acceptable do something like that. Thanks |

| Fe cast iron headers -- Gary, 07/03/2004
I found a set of fe cast headers at swapmeet. They are the short set.The guy wants $450. for them. They are in good shape. My question is will they fit in a1964 Galaxie with power steering, 390, 4-speed and is this a good price? Should I try to find the longer ones?
Thanks |
| | RE: Fe cast iron headers -- McQ, 07/03/2004
That's a fair price and yes they'll fit in your '64 390 with 4 speed and power steering very well.
A very nice addition to your '64. The long 427 exhaust manifolds generally bring another $100-$200 beyond the $450 - that's for the '63/'64 long manifolds. The '65 and later are higher yet. |
| | RE: Fe cast iron headers -- Gary XL, 10/21/2004
I put a set of these on my 64 Galaxie XL Convert, 390, 4 spd, ps, and they fit fine. I had a set of the long ones and they hit the X frame (damn the luck, oh well I have a convert!). My pass side manifold didn't have a taper for the donut, and there was no heat riser, but there is a donut made with one side flat and a short piece of tubing to keep the donut from crushing in. Mine have been installed since 1986 with no problems (car was stored from '87-'04. Just pulled it out of the barn again in May, and still no exhaust leaks (from the front half- the mufflers however..). |

| Am I getting ripped? Please help with engine prob -- Mike, 07/02/2004
Here is the deal. I bought a used 2000 Ford Mustang GT a little over a year. Last month my car was overheating and found out that I had to have the Head gasket replaced. Took into ford dealership and the repair cost $1500. One week later (about 1000 miles) I went on a climbing trip up in the Sierras. On my way home, I heard a loud pop. I pulled over and heard a harmonic banging. I was able to drive home and found in the morning that the spark plug had busted off. I take the car back to the dealer and they tell me that the plug had busted and fell into the engine and was not a result of their work on the head. I was told that the plugs are not removed during the head work. Can Head cause the above issue? I was told that the normal job would be $2600 but they would only charge me $1000. What do you think? What would you do? I believe that something could have happened during the work. It seems kind of fishy. Please advise.
Thanks,

| | | RE: What caused the plug to brake? -- Mike, 07/03/2004
I have no idea what caused the plug to break. I was driving down the 395 in CA and I heard a loud pop. I checked under the hood and noticed a spring arcing near a bolt right next to the plug whole in the engine. There was oil around the whole as well. I think the noise was echoing out of the engine hole. They called me 2 days ago and just told me the coil assembly busted and they would only charge me 50 bucks. then today, I get a call saying that they tried to screw a plug in and there was no threads and part of the old plug fell inside and screwed up the piston head. What would you guys do. I just paid these guys $1500 now they want another $1000.
I really appreciate all and any advice.
Thanks,
Mike |

it but it very well could be coincidence that stuff happens often i'd say 65/35 %, that's why it's imperative to go to a trusted mechanic. Be darn hard to prove either way. |
| | RE: Am I getting ripped? Please help with engine prob -- Dano, 07/03/2004
It sounds like they just replaced the gasket on the old head, It may be possible that the head was cracked around the spark plug hole due to the overheating, causing it to fail. At the very least, it sounds like they did a poor job of checking for damage to the head from overheating. |
| | RE: Am I getting ripped? Please help with engine prob -- raycfe, 07/03/2004
If the plug blew out the hole and broke the coil, its happens a lot....Not many threads in alum heads....Did 3 last year on f150's in a GM shop...May not hurt to call ford customer service. |

Consumer reports lists the 4.6 for passenger side head gasket malfunction, why they note passenger side head gasket and not both I don't know. Might be a nice place to start if you contact ford about the problem. |
