Just wondering what other people may be getting for mileage with those 20 gal. tanks a 390, and a auto trans. Thanks. |
| K&N (and other) "performance" air filter tests -- P, 07/22/2003
I'm posting this thread around in order to do some good for the fellow FE owners. If you see it somewhere else, please realize I'm doing this to get the word out, and not trying to be a "post whore" :-)
This is an independent test, done by an engineering student. The results confirm what I've always suspected, but could never get any real world data on.
So here's the data now, and gentlemen, it's time to toss those K&N filters.

| | Time to toss the Amsoil filters first! -- Royce Peterson, 07/22/2003
The way I read his report it appears the K& N easily flows the best and filters as well as anything else. He does not have any real way to quantify the filtration of the tested units. He does spend a lot of time talking about how disappointing the Amsoil results are given their advertising hype and price.
I am a paper filter guy myself, Autolite OEM typically although I have a K&N on my 8V 427 stroker. At 300 miles a year it could last forever.

| | | RE: Time to toss em both?? -- P, 07/24/2003
From some of the feedback I've seen, I'd toss both of em due to "high silica count" in the oil.
One very informative poster indicated he was running a diesel rig with a K&N. He does periodic oil analysis, and the K&N posted an enviable "high silica count".
How about that? For a questionable smidgen of "higher flow" you get the added benefit of having an extra dose of imbedded silica running over the bearing surfaces and rings. And all that for paying extra money too??
The only place I'd run a Amsoil or K&N filter would be the drag strip, just to eke out that teeeenie weeeenie extra bit of power their marketing departments claim the filter will give.
Someone did an analysis of the filter surface too. A stock "pleated" filter has a HUGE volume of additional filter surface area, waaay beyond (like 10x) over the K&N type surface area.
Like the guy says, your car, your money, you decide. I spent the bucks on two of them, and have the recharge kit, but dangit, I'm tossing them.

| Water necks for 428 PI intakes. -- James, 07/21/2003
I notice that the steel water neck on my PI intake is hard on water neck gaskets.
At some of the shows that I have been to lately that a 428 car with a PI intake had and aluminum water neck on it. I am thinking this might cure my gasket eating problem but where would I get one? Was it a Ford item?
My PI intake uses the the big 427 thermostat and steel 427 water neck. What kind of alternatives do I have? |
| PI intake differences. C6 vs C7 -- James, 07/21/2003
I have the aluminum PI intake with the C6 casting number on it that tells me it was made in 1966. Almost all the other PI intakes that I have seen on the other 428 engines have the C7 casting number on them. What is the difference between these two intakes? |
| | Not much. -- Royce Peterson, 07/21/2003
The only difference I can see is the early ones use a larger diameter thermostat and a different water neck as a result.

| timing -- mike, 07/21/2003
I have a 69 mach1 which I put a warmed over 390 in.It has a demon carb on it,a 650 I think and a electric fuel pump and the car is running really rich. Can it be because I dont have a regulator on it.Its a holley "red" pump.My main question is that as I backed up and went forward the car acted like it jumped timing. It barely ran and only ran a little better if I moved the distribtor a half inch before its old place.Today I tore down the front of the motor expecting it had jumped timing but the marks on the timing gears are still alined.Any ideas on whats going on? |
| Tranny to Motor -- Scott, 07/19/2003
I just rebuilt my 390 (thanks for all the suggestions and help along the way) and my friends and I put the motor back in last night. This morning I realized we forgot to put the bell housing cover between the motor and the C 4. My question is does anyone have any suggestions about how to get that cover on without lifting the motor back out. I though about cutting the cover up the middle and putting each 1/2 around the crank? Dumb idea? |

| | | RE: 390 hp -- Gerry Proctor, 07/21/2003
Only way to know the horsepower your engine is making is to measure it on a dyno. Too many variables to make a prediction. You could purchase one of the software programs like desktop dyno that will allow you to get a good idea of the theoretical horsepower based upon very specific parameters. These programs are fairly good at modeling for seeing how changes will affect the outcome.
As to running 10.50s in the 1/4 mile...that's a pretty tall order for a steel body car. Figure you need at least 700 hp in a 3,000lb car. And that assumes you got the rest of the combination right (good chassis set up, right rear, right trans, etc...). I don't think your engine is going to be anywhere near the power to weight ratio to get you to those acceleration levels. |
| | | | RE: 390 hp -- tom, 07/21/2003
this car will only weigh around 2800 its a chris alston chassis cas with a glass front end |
| | | | | RE: 390 hp -- ray, 07/22/2003
You may want to look at using nitrous. I don't think your 390 will have enough hp to run those times. |
| Going price for Tri Power -- Seth, 07/17/2003
What would be a reasonable price for a Ford tri-power intake with the correct Holley carbs, all linkage, fuel log with hoses and clamps, and a repro air cleaner? It looks to be in good shape, but has helicoils in the valve cover bolt holes.
Any ideas? |
| spark plug ? and observation on original wires -- dennie, 07/17/2003
I changed plugs today and used autolite 45's nobody had motorcraft bsf42c like old ones. Anyways I thought i had read about gap on here to set it wide, I set mine a tight 50, now after reading I think maybe 40 or 45 would have been better, I do have pertronix installed and it ran great to work, had a slight miss before. Am I too wide?
Also does anyone know what original 67 plug wires look like, mine are black autolite radio suppression and are numbered to cylinder in yellow, friend that traded his concourse 641/2 conv k code for a 68 gt500, says they look original to him, doesn't matter to me just neat to think it still runs like a raped ape on 36 year old wires. |
| | follow up ? on plugs -- dennie, 07/17/2003
My car used to fire up instantly when cold, It almost anticipated keyturn and started, after putting the wide-gapped plugs in in has to crank a few seconds, is that indicative of a wider gap? |

| Which water pump to buy - 390? -- Patrick, 07/17/2003
hi all, I have a 68 gt 390 and I was looking through archives..and found alot on the water pump..but I didn't seem to catch anyone say which one is best to go with..the standard replacement at the ol'e 29.95 price..or a $80 brand new unit?
I'mdoing the water pump and rad...putting in a 3+ row modine and would like to pick a good pump...any suggestions?
Thanks so much! -Patrick,NY |
| | RE: Which water pump to buy - 390? -- Anthony, 07/17/2003
Patrick, It took me a while to get over it, but I own a fleet of ford vans and do alot of the work on them myself. I have gone both ways on this, but now I buy the new ones when they are available. The extra $50.00 wont hurt so much when you are in there a year later putting in another one. Anthony |
| | My experience. -- James, 07/21/2003
I started with the Oriely's 29.99 rebuild. Then, I updraded to a high volume steel one by Koolz It, or what ever there name is, for $80 and saw no difference on the temp gauge. Edelbrock sells an aluminum one to the tune of $169.00. I have heard no feed back on weather it works any better but it is lighter. How much lighter I do not know.
This is one item that I think the standard rebuild works good enough on. |
| | | RE: My experience. -- BK, 12/20/2003
I purchased the Edelbrock for my rebuild. Have not used it yet, but it is roughly about half the weight of the cast iron pump. Mounting bosses, etc. are the same as the cast iron pump.

| | | | RE: My experience. -- crusinbuddy, 12/21/2003
I have used the rebuilt ones and have never had a problem. |
