and after the axle puller, replace the bearings, somtimes bearing balls get damaged, and you don't know it,a headache cure comment, also relace the axle tube seals |
| | | | RE: use a axle puller...n/m -- David, 06/06/2006
well after messing with it for 3 hours I finally got it out. and it was just rusted in and after using some kroil it just sliped out and i was right it was a 31 spline axle with the daytona support bearing and it is a true 9 inch ring. how much could I sell this axle for because I have one in my truck all ready and it was one my old man bought about 13 years ago |
| | | | | RE: use a axle puller...n/m -- walt, 06/06/2006
the axle shaft lengths are different between the mustang and a light truck, all trucks came with 31 spline, tapered roller bearings, the light f 100 came with 28's and sealed roller bearings,as the passeneger car and the axle housing is much stronger on the truck appications, gvw is not dependant on the spring, but the axle bearing load the tapered carries more load than than the sealed ball bearing typethe f 250 and up has double tapered bearings, full floating axles,150 /100 has semi floating axles, there the difference in gvw,and other things about trucks compared to passenger cars |
| | | | | RE: use a axle puller...n/m -- walt, 06/06/2006
wasn't the daytona bearing an over the counter thing? |
| | | | | | RE: use a axle puller...n/m -- David, 06/10/2006
no it was a stock option and was used in big block cars and trucks. it is stamped with the code and it was made jan. 23 1968 every thing on the rear end matches and the tag i looked it up is a mustang taged rear end |
| | | | | | | RE: use a axle puller...n/m -- walt, 06/10/2006
i found an N case posi 350,31 spline,in a 73 f 150 4wd pickup truck, never looked for that daytona stuff, got an 430 drag pck rear out of a 69 cj,,i put it in storage never looked it in 20 yrs,how can i tell if they have the daytona bearing?aslo same with my 72 cj mach, that has a posi 350 Ncase 31,not an optoin on that model |

| 427 Sleeves -- Chris Shomaker, 06/03/2006
Hey guys,
I have a brain buster of a question and hopefully someone can help me out. I recently got my hands on a 427 MR. The only problem, is the block is trashed, someone stored it for years and never drained the car of water. So now i have a huge hole on the left side of the block. Other than that all of the parts are in great condition. So my question is, can a 390 or 428 block be re sleeved with 427 sleeves? Then bored .030 over because the pistons in the engine i have are an after market addition from a previous rebuild way back in the 70's. So are there any options on this? I would love to have a new aluminum block from shelby but i dont have 5k to drop on just a block. My plan is if this will work. Is to Resleeve a 390/428 block with stronger and beefier sleeves and bore them out to the proper size, then install the 427 componets into the engine. Aside from that being alittle unusal, are there any other parts that would need modification? I havent taken it apart or even had much time to inspect it. So im not sure if it is a side oiler or top oiler design. If it is a side oiler, will that still work with a top oiler block? Sorry for the long string of questions. Sever hours and a 6 pack of beer spent on the internet have left me with more questions that i started with.
Any help or advice someone could provide would help me greatly, and thanks in advance to anyone.

| | RE: 427 Sleeves -- walt, 06/03/2006
i have seen blocks that were repaired in the outer water jacket with no problems, have it crack checked, and the cost of repairs, before you trash it,the cost of the other option that you mention ,can get very costly, and if you do trash it,save the main caps, they were limited production number of blocksand the number of caps to match |
| | | RE: 427 Sleeves -- Chris Shomaker, 06/03/2006
I havent had a machine shop look at it or disassemble yet. But its not a simple crack. Its a hole the size of a softball, with cracks running up to the top and most likely going to the top of the deck and even inside. This is the worst i have ever seen an engine without being blown. It literally looks like someone shot this thing at point blank range with a shotgun. I took the oil pan off just to check the internals, and the cracks continued inside and along the base of the cylinders. I can verify it but i think this engine was parked with pure water in it. No way antifreeze could let this kind of damage happen. As for the Main caps i will save them an any part that im unable to use. Thank for the tip =) |

| 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- sall, 06/01/2006
I have a 67 390 gt Mustang. I just started the new rebuilt engine and after about twenty minutes of run time it start making some scary noises. I pulled the valve cover assuming that I had some big problems only to find that one of the rocker arms had slid off the valve and was now pushing the valve spring up an down. Does anyone know why this would happen and is there a better way like roller rockers or something like that. |
| | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- walt, 06/01/2006
do you have the rocker arm interference springs in place? |
| | | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- sall, 06/01/2006
Yes. The only guess that I have is that there may not have been the proper clearance on the valve. It may have been to tight. |
| | | | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- walt, 06/01/2006
clearance is not the problem, bent valve, bad valve tip, rocker arm centered on the valve tip.bent push rods hardy affect rocker alignnent on shaft rockers, also are you running then spacers that replace them springs |
| | | | | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- walt, 06/02/2006
forgot to mention, you have the right rocker stands? |
| | | | | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- sall, 06/02/2006
I don't follow the last part about the spacers and springs. I have the stock springs installed and they appear to be in good working condition. |
| | | | | | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- walt, 06/02/2006
the springs on the shafts between the rockers, some people had spacers made up to replace the springs |
| | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- sall, 06/01/2006
I also just went out and checked to make sure the push rod wasn't bent. It was straight as an arrow. |
| | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- walt, 06/02/2006
broken rocker shaft, seen them, when people use them to pull/install engines, but your rocker arm if in proper location, will not create your problem,i suspect a bad valve tip, bent vavle,or guide not reamed, drilled right |
| | | RE: 67 390 gt Rocker issues -- walt, 06/03/2006
i forgot, the rocker arm face not square to the valve stem, look at that also |
