| New 390 vibrates -- Gary, 04/15/2006
Just fired up my fresh rebuilt 390 and I have an engine vibration, increases with RPM. The engine rebuilder said he put in a 428 crank and I used my 390 flywheel and harmonic balancer. After reading up on old posts regarding internal / external balancing, I'm concerned about the combination I have but would like to check without pulling the engine. Is there a way to find out what crank I have? Can I pull the tranny (I don't want to) and put on a 428 flywheel without balancing the crank and flywheel together? HELP!

| 428 CJ. How to identify. -- Brandon, 04/15/2006
I am in the process of purchasing a 70 Mach I with a 428 CJ. How can I be sure that it is a true 428 CJ externally? From what I have read the 390 and 428 are pretty similar. Will the 390 and 428 take the same heads and intake? If not, could I get the casting numbers from them and determine if it is a 428? If you can't tell the difference between the 390 and 428 parts how else can I tell? I read about the freezer plug may have a 352 in it, but that is any FE big block engine I think. Any info would be greatly aprreciated. |
| 429 cobrajet -- scott holmes, 04/14/2006
does anybody know the firing order for a ford 429 cobrajet? i can't find it anywhere! please help thanks |
| | RE: 429 cobrajet -- Brandon, 04/15/2006
Scott, I looked in the Ford 70 shop manual for your answer. It says that all V8 engines (except 351) firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. And this firing order is also under the engine section for the 429 CID engine. So, that looks to be your firing order. I hope this helps. |

What do you think would be a fair price for something like that, Mr. F? Maybe it will get relisted.

| | there's a reason... -- Pete's Ponies, 04/12/2006
why there are no bids...too much $. Whereas I would love to have a Texas rust free body..there are enough of them available in rust free states. I know there are two trucks, but basically you would be building one. You can get one ready to drive home for that money. |

| 390 Identification -- Brent Farley, 04/11/2006
I have bought a 69 mach I and the guy I bought it from claims it has the original 390. My question is how do I know for sure it is a 390? The block has a 352 stamped on it so does that mean I have a 352? Does anyone know on this I need help. Thanks for the help. Brent |

| | RE: 390 Identification -- Rick, 04/12/2006
Brent;
Just about all FE (and some FT) applications had "352" cast on the block. The story I got from an old auto industry retiree was that Ford created casting molds for 332 and 352 blocks. As the CID of the FE motors increased, the exterior dimension did not, and therefore the same exterior mold was used for the 352, 360, 361, 390, 391 and 410 cid engines, as well as some early 427 and 428 castings. Don't know how true this story is, but I have personally seen 352, 360, 390 and 410 engines with "352" cast on the block. |

You may be able to find a partial VIN stamped on the back of the driver’s side of the engine block just below where the head meets the block. Also look for the casting dates on the block and heads. The date must be prior to the date your car was built for it to be original. It also should not be more then a month or two before the car was build. If you use the search button you will find that many people have asked this same question. You will also find the places you need to look for the numbers. |

| | RE: 64 Galaxie Tubular Exhaust/Headers -- Ron, 04/17/2006
I've been there, so you have some choices, Sanderson makes short tubes, and as stated FPA's, Hooker and Crites. the latter two as is the FPA's are long tube but they hang lower than some like. Good luck! |

| | 390 GT heads -- raycfe, 04/08/2006
sould be 390 GT heads with 14 exhaust bolt holes drilling. |
| | | RE: '68 generic FE's -- McQ, 04/08/2006
A very common/standard FE head introduced in '68. If they do have the 14 exhaust bolt holes, as raycfe indicates, they were originally bolted on a '68 390 unibody FE. Otherwise they found there way onto 360's, 390's, even '68 Galaxie 428's. They are very similar to the C7AE head.
I don't think they're as good as the C6AE-R head or, obviously, as the C8OE-N CJ head. A set of C6AE-R's can be "built" to match the CJ head. |
