Anybody know where I can get 406 pistons 20-30 over for a rebuild? Nobody seems to make them! Thanks. |
| Beefier F-350 Truck 360? -- John M., 10/19/2001
I just bought a 360 to replace my F-150's destroyed 390, until I can get the money to rebuild the 390. This 360 came out of a '73 long flatbed F-350, with a PTO on the tranny. Is it any beefier than the 390? Would it be better to bore/stroke the 360 to 390? By the way, the 390 is a '76, so the blocks' year of manufacture might make a difference. I would have thought that the 350 would have a 390, and it was even sold to me that way, but the VIN and engine sticker say 360. Any ideas? |
| | It's possible. -- Dave Shoe, 10/19/2001
I've wondered whether the larger pickups got beefier FE 360/390 blocks than the lighter weight trucks.
Note that the 360/390 block is the same bore. These are the same block. Also note that series 600-900 trucks from 1964-1978 got the FT. The FT is always a fully-reinforced block. Series 100-500 trucks got the FE.
100-series trucks from 1968-76 seem to have most often gotten the standard 360/390 car block, a great block, but with no reinforcements (the truck version is a lower compression version of the car engine). I've noticed that some trucks got reinforced cranksaddles in their 360/390 block. I haven't had a chance to study this very well, but this may have been in 200-series trucks, though I'm only guessing.
Perhaps 300 series trucks were also specified to get nodular maincaps. Maybe 500-series FE trucks also got the reinforced cylinder walls. All just guesses. I've seen the incremental changes in these blocks, however, and have always wondered this.
I'm keeping my eyes open to learn more, but it's tough, in part because I have little access to the larger trucks, and in part because these trucks often get "crate rebuilds" because larger trucks are used for commerce and can't afford to be out-of-action while their original engine undergoes a rebuild. With a crate rebuild, there is no way of knowing the casting features of the block which came with the truck.

Shoe: Thanks for the information. It was espcially helpful to know that I can turn the 360 into a 390 down the road, if I want. |
| | | | find a 428 crank -- richard, 10/20/2001
and you can turn your 360 into a 410 if you want. the 360 was made by taking a 390 block and stuffing in a 352 crank and rod. |
| | | | | RE: find a 428 crank -- Travis Miller, 10/22/2001
The 390's truck engines in the mid 70's used 410 pistons to lower the compression ratio. When you pull your 390 apart, check to see if the sides of the pistons say 410. If that is the case, just add a 410/428 crank, harmonic balancer, and flywheel. You will have a 410 with a good compression ratio. |

Does an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake sit the same height as the stock intake on a 69 Mach 1 428CJ with ram air? Has anyone put a Performer RPM intake on a 428CJ with all the smog system intact? I need to know before a 428CJ ramair setup gets seriously hacked up!! Please help ASAP!!

| Steve Christ's book -- Joel, 10/18/2001
I got it last night. I read through the first few chapters. The first section on "Do you need to rebuild?" is fabulous. He outlines how to determine where the motors weakness is. If you don't have it, get it. It does seem to focus more on the 427 than 428. |
| | RE: Steve Christ's, and Pat Ganahl books -- R. Shannon, 10/18/2001
Yes, it is a great book for the FE. Back when it was published the 427 wasn't so rare as it is now days. But, most of the same mods for the 427 will work on the rest of the FE family. Another bennie is the VIN P/N idenfication numbers, high preformance parts idenifing, and pictures of different heads. Another good source is the Ford Preformance by Pat Ganahl which covers all the ford Family (older). Especially the build up of the 454 FE that we all dream about in a 66 or 67 Fairlane, Yea, you know what I talking about... |
| | | RE: Steve Christ's, and Pat Ganahl books -- John, 10/19/2001
Mr Christ's book is undoubtedly the best, as it is dedicated only to the FE where Mr. Ganahl's covers other engines as well, somewhat at the expense of the FE.
BUt I have another one I like. It is:
Musclecar & Hi-Po Engines Ford Big Block a series of Petersen reprints from HotRod Magazine put out by Brooklands Books.
Good info for the most part. It does cover some of the 429-460 engines, but is primarily FE...good article on Ed Pink's Cammer |
| Cast Blast -- Bob, 10/17/2001
Got some cast iron manifolds that were spray painted with a no name cast blast paint.
Other that bead/sand blasting them is there any way to get them clean to put high temperature paint on them? |
| | RE: Cast Blast -- Gerry Proctor, 10/24/2001
Yes, spray them down with EasyOff oven cleaner. The lye does wonders at stripping grease, oil, paint, skin and just about anything else it comes into contact with. Another strip trick is to put them in a small water-filled pan and pour in a can of Drano. The preferred method still, though, is to mechanically strip them with a blast media. |

I am in search of 1 C8WE-A 427 head for a GT-E. I have the last 427 GT-E Cougar which I am either going to restore or if anyone has a real interest in the last 427 vehicle, it may be for sale. Thanks for any leads on the head. |

that I wish I didn't have a conscience. A couple bank jobs, and i could afford that GT-E. That's assuming I wouldn't get caught. Which I probably would, as I haven't the inclination, nor the slightest idea how to go about pulling off a heist.
Oh well, sucks to be poor! ;->
Good luck finding that rare head. |
| How's this sound -- Bob, 10/17/2001
I've been dragging a 427 side oiler and a bunch of FE parts around for years and have decided it's time to put it together. I've got a 428 crank, LeMans rods, .030 over pistons to match the block overbore, a couple sets of ported CJ heads, adjustable rocker arms, Mickey Thompson Cross Ram Log manifold with a pair of early 427 Holleys (1300CFM total), several sets of headers to fit the '66 -69 Falcon-Fairlane-Comet body including a set of the Mickey Thompson equal length ones that stagger the header pipes in the collector. I also have a Lakewood, close and wide ratio Toploaders, 4.30 and 4.71 pumpkins, Hurst linelock, MSD 6, etc.
I believe my compression ratio will be around 11 or 12 to one but will cc'd everything to get something in that range. I don't have a cam or valves for one set of heads (lost them and don't ask me where, if I knew they wouldn't be lost). I also will have to find a car probably a '66 Falcon preferably a wagon for this engine after its finished next spring. I may drive it occasionally on the street but mostly for the strip, racing against my best previous time just to see if I can make it go faster. WIll probably gut the interior and add whatever roll bar/cage that NHRA requires. I really don't want to rev much over 6000 (well, maybe 6500) so it will live. (I've blown up a couple from over reving many years ago so a rev limiter that can't be reached from the driver's seat will be installed.) I haven't a clue as to how fast it might go.
For a cam I'm very seriously considering the larger of the Crane Hydraulic Rollers dual pattern (300 308 advertised, 238 246 @ 0.050, with .632 .655 gross lift, 112 lope separation) and getting a set of roller rocker arms in lieu of the stock FE adjustables. I am wondering about air flow and whether this engine and manifold would work with that cam. I'm also willing to increase the valve size if that would be possible. I would love to swap those CJ heads for a set of 427 Medium Riser heads but I wonder if MR heads would work the Cross Ram manifold since the manifold runners are really not that big; the runners may be too small for the CJ heads but I really want to use that manifold.
Comments and suggestions welcomed.

| | RE:How 'bout a '67 F'lane wagon? -- Mike McQuesten, 10/17/2001
Bob, I have a great '67 Fairlane Country Squire Wagon I'd part with reasonably.....
It's complete. It's a 289/C4/8". It's complete with a nearly perfect interior - even a crack free dash pad! Springtime Yellow with parchment interior. Body is okay. Some rust behind the rear wheel wells but perfect for cutting and expanding for big 'uns.
So take a little trip up to the great Northwest....Spokane, WA! Hurry before we're buried in a few feet of snow. |

| | | RE: You've got me salivating! nm -- Bob, 10/17/2001
Well it will take probably take me all winter to get the thing together. I'll post my progress. I've got a bunch of things to relearn as I haven't built an engine in more than twenty years.
And of course I have to do a lot of other things. Right now I am in the midst of taking the SCJ manifolds off my '66 Galaxie and putting on a pair of 427 cast iron factory headers. That should kill my spare time for the next two weeks what with rebuilding the manifold header pipes. And I've got to rebuild my '88 F-150's rear axle. Its a one wheel drive and I'm installing a locker and changing the ratio tfrom 3.08 to 3.73. Never done this kind of work so I'll be kinda slow.
The hardest part has been finding all of the pieces. I've moved four times and the boxes have been repacked and relabeled so things are not always what they say. I also had some parts get soaked in a trailer that leaked. So I've got to clean that up as I go. Some of the pot metal and aluminum parts corroded real bad and that's going to slow me down as I try to repair or try to find replacement pieces. Oh well, its no big deal, the people in NYC have real problems.
I found a set of MR riser heads but they are expensive. I'll have to see what my heads might bring on eBay. Maybe if I sell both sets they might cover the MR heads. I wonder if ported and cc'd heads are worth more than the stock CJ heads?
And I'm still wondering about the cam. I know it is a lot of money but a roller is the best way to get the valves open quickly so the cylinders can fill better. I think the 454 will not be ovver cammed but I don't know that.
Any way thanks for your interest. |

I've got and have seen a couple of these on eBay inthe last three months. One had it and the other did not. I also have a distributor that fits the manifold. It is a cut down Ford model but I'm told that the Mallory YL models can also be cut down to fit. |

Here is one. I took three and if you'll e-mail me I'll send the other to you.

The basic distributor is a dual point, no vacuum advance unit C0AF-K. The spacer and short shaft look very home made. The spacer is just a piece of aluminum. The short shaft looks like it was made by cutting a distributor shaft down and putting a hex on the upper end to drive the distributor.

| What weight was the factory 427 MR flywheel? -- Chuck Brandt, 10/17/2001
I'm wondering what weight the factory 427 flywheel was that was used with a Medium Riser? Pretty heavy wasn't it?
Thanks, Chuck |
| | RE: What weight was the factory 427 MR flywheel? -- Mel Clark, 10/17/2001
It was pretty heavy, for sure. 30 lbs or more I would guess, of cast steel, not forged. I never had a problem with the OEM wheels but, I have heard of some explosions. Probably due to excessive heat checking and cracks. |
| 390GT Heads -- Ian Dobson, 10/17/2001
just a quick question about Heads. where can I get flow numbers on the stock FE heads
what is the typical RPM range of stock 390GT Heads, this is without any porting work done to them. Just wondering because for us poor people in Canada earning canadian monopoly money, it takes a lot of our dollars to buy a set of aluminum heads. :(
