| 4spd toploader id -- Martin, 02/12/2004
What code should have a 4spd toploader for a '68 390 from a mustang. I am restoring a '69 mach 1 and need a toploader for my 390. Overhere in the Netherlands it is hard to find toploaders so what should i look for and what should fit.
Thanks, greetings.

| Excessive heat in the cabin, question/LONG! -- ponyboy, 02/12/2004
O.K., its the middle of winter, the car has been in storage since Nov., I still find ways to do something Mustang related everyday.sometimes, dream about getting the car out this spring. O.K., heres my question, the car is a 67 S coded mustang. the motor I bought (on line), the seller told me it was out of a 67 T-bird, first mistake, didn't know I needed a GT motor, second thing, my rebuild guy tells me after the fact, it's not a 390, but a 352, thats been bored +.030, he needed to go another.030, now I'm getting mad, Continuing, drill the holes, put the manifolds on. the engine is in the car,
the radiator is moving "good water, the block temp (taken w/a laser type thermometer) is not running any higher than 190. the engine temp gauge in the dash is WAY on the HOT side, and I can remember sweating my but off as the temp inside with windows down, at intown speeds is 20 degrees hotter than the outside temp.
I think alot about this, the motor has been properly timed and carburated, and I do not look forward to another hotter than normal summer behind the wheel of that heat box.
Any sugestions or comments would be helpful.
Thanks. |

| Motor mounts -- Dano, 02/11/2004
I have heard that you can convert the standard 67-70 mustang small block frame mounts over to the FE style by just drilling new holes in them to accomodate the FE motor mounts. Is this true? and does anyone know where to drill the new holes? |
| 390 Valve seals -- Tim P., 02/10/2004
How good are teflon valve seals compared to others? |
| | RE: 390 Valve seals -- greg, 02/10/2004
From my experience in the past, they work better on motors without a lot of manifold vaccum and are better suited to a race engine. Keep in mind it's been a while since I've built an FE and technology has come a long way since then, I think they are less likely to come off the guide under hi performance use since it must be machined to accept them, so that's an advantage. |

| c-6 transmission shift points -- galaxie390, 02/10/2004
I once saw a Ford tech service bulletin on drilling out the governor weight to raise shift points. Does anyone have info on this and how many grams to drill out to raise the shift points from say 4600 to 5200? 5600? 6000? (I am aware of the vacuum modulator but that is worth 100-200 rpm at the most) much thanks |

The Ford TSB was circa 1967 ie just after the 390gt came out, it was about drilling the governor to tune the c-6 shift point for the 390gt.
But I dont think drilling the govnr will do enough. Maybe somebody knows more - how to raise c-6 shifts from 4600 to say 5200 or 5600? Springs?
Adding a cam doesnt do much if shifts are left at 4600! |
| | | | RE: Published by Ford or...? Any idea of the date? [n/m] -- mad scientist, 07/02/2004
I know of a fellow who used reverse cut gears in his fairlane (with 427 and C6), which effectively made it a manu-matic. |
| | | | RE: Published by Ford or...? Any idea of the date? -- Robert, 07/10/2004
I sure would love a copy of that TSB.
My built C6 has the exact same problem. It has been suggested that the governor is the problem.
It works perfectly except I need it to hold gear another 1500 RPM or so at WOT. |
| | | | | RE: Published by Ford or...? Any idea of the date? -- galaxie390, 07/10/2004
The TSB (If I ever find my copy again) was only for the 390 GT, so I think it would only raise the shift points to 4800, maybe 5000.
There has to be a way to go higher because the CJ cars shifted at 5600-6000. It can't be that magical
I am glad somebody else has this dilemma too! |

| FE adjustable Rockers -- Terry, 02/10/2004
Any one out there know where i can go to buy a standard type adjustable rocker arm, rocker shafts and pushrods for a 390 FE. Im not having to much luck in tracking down a set, some speed shops dont have the set or they only have roller set ups. Thanks |
| | RE: FE adjustable Rockers -- Gerry Proctor, 02/10/2004
Crane makes a ductile iron set that is a better design than the factory stuff. They also make beefier chromoly pushrods.
There are also companied like DCS motorsports and Precision Pumps that can hook you up with HD shafts, stands, spacers or anything else you need for the FE valvetrain. |

harland sharp has both a roller tip and a full bearing roller rocker, comp cams also has a roller tip, in Summit Racing. $ 309 |
| | | | | RE: FE adjustable Rockers -- Paul Thompson, 02/11/2004
I have two shafts, with with adjustable rockers and spacer springs that I bought new when I bought my block. They are unused, although I stole one rocker to replace a broken on on my 427. I have no idea of value. |

Try FPA, I recently got a set of original Ford 427 adjustable rocker arms from Stan at FPA. |
