| help on c2ae steel rocker stands and assm. -- charlie, 02/28/2002
Just checking, I bought a set of rocker assm with c2ae steel stands and adjustable rockers. I can't find a listing for that part number. They look to be the same height as my aluminum assm. Can any one give more info on the numbers? I'm looking at using these on 428 cj heads. Gave $50 for full set, price looked good just for adjustible rockers. Thanks |

good catch. Now are you going to compliment your find and splurge for end stands and spacers? |

Spacers are a deffinate, Other than ebay I haven't been able to find a set of end stands, any idea where to go on those? If I don't find any I will at least get a set of harder shafts. Let me know if you know a good place to find a set of end stands, I know comp cams makes and uses them on their fe rocker arm assm. but doesn't look like they sell indivdl. pieces. Thanks |

Rocker Arm Specialists in CA.
They treated me very well when I purchased a full set of their adjustable rockers, shafts, billet aluminum stands and end supports. I think they offer the end supports seperately.
They do refurbish old Ford adjustables too. They install an adjuster with a locking nut.

| Edelbrock head alert! -- James, 02/28/2002
I sent a lengthy email to Royce about this but thought that some of you might benifit from this info on these heads. Edelbrock put cheap springs and shims in these heads. I had a spring go bad at 5000 miles that almost dropped a valve and all of the .015 shims under the valves were not hardened and the damper chewed them up. If you have these heads you had better check it out or you will be sorry. If you are ok then no harm done but if you are one of the lucky ones like me you will be sorry if you don't check it out. My machinist is telling me to buy the hardened .015 shims for the big block shi..I mean chevy from the local GM dealership and replace them. Just FYI. |
| Edelbrock RPM intake vs. Ford 428 PI intake. -- James, 02/28/2002
I have a shaker scooped 69 428 Mustang. I was thinking about upgrading to the performer rpm intake but would like to know how much taller it is than the PI intake. I have to keep the shaker hight in mind. The only reason that I used the Pi intake to begin with is that it is the same as the CJ intake just made out of aluminum. Does anyone know? |
| | RE: Edelbrock RPM intake vs. Ford 428 PI intake. -- Gerry Proctor, 02/28/2002
I dfon't know the dimensional difference, but I guess the larger question is why are you changing from a PI to an RPM? There is very little performance difference between the two and there is no other advantage, like weight-savings. The two manifolds achieve their performance characteristics through different methods (PI - Large plenum with large initial runner volume; RPM - Large plenum with constant dimension runner) but the difference in how the perform isn't statistically significant. Sorry this doesn't answer your direct question, but you already know the PI allows you to retain the shaker and it is a factory manifold that does match your intake ports. |
| | RE: Edelbrock RPM intake vs. Ford 428 PI intake. -- JC, 03/02/2002
I was told by an "E-bock" tech. person that their intake is one inch taller than the stock PI intake. He claimed that the rubber seal would take up the difference. I decided not to go that route, I am running the PI intake and am satisfied. My car is running the Comp 280 cam. |
| | | JC, what kind a tranny..... -- James, 03/02/2002
Are you running a stick or an automatic? That 280 duration cam sounds big. Is that @ .050? |
| | | | RE: JC, what kind a tranny..... -- jim, 03/06/2002
having tried both the perf.rpm, and the PI. in an auto car with 3.91 gearing, the PI. seems to be more potent from 3000rpm on up. HOWEVER, the blue thunder is a very close 1st, as it is smoother all the way way up the rpm range, up to 6200 rpm. my first choice would be the blue thunder, followed by the PI. |
| 7 liter Cougars value? -- James, 02/28/2002
When I was 16, I had to buy my parts from a salvage. This salvage a 67 Cougar with 7 liter badges on the side. It also had these little chrome vertical ribs on the lower rockers just infront of the rear wheels. The rear end was about all that was left of the running gear with these axels that had smooth faces on them. I pried the 7 liter badges off it and still have them somewhere. What was this car and how much would it be worth in good shape today? I also had a chance to buy a 390 67 Cougar for $1600 in 1983 but didn't have the cash. How much would this critter be worth today in good shape? |
| | They did not make any '67 7 litre Cougars. -- Royce Peterson, 02/28/2002
The little chrome vertical ribs were a '67 only thing so you must have the right year. They did make a 6.5 litre in 1967, find the badges and we will know for sure.
The 1968 badges say "7.0 Litre GTE" and have a running Cougar above the lettering.

| | RE: 7 liter Cougars value? -- Tim B, 02/28/2002
You mentioned the 'hash marks" that were on XR7s. According to NADA a 1967 Cougar XR7 with a 390 is:
Total Low Retail: $5,906 Total Average Retail: $10,159 Total High Retail: $14,918
Those figures do not include #1 show cars, that would be higher of course.

hey royce, i'm pulling for you but i'm tired of getting my butt kicked by those studebakers, and they always win! kind of takes the fun out of it! they actually got beat last year in a 304 stock block lark by a 427 yenko camaro that got them by a couple of tenths when the blower belt came off (yes, a LOT of studebakers came with superchargers, studebaker owned McCulloch/Paxton and granatelli motorsports). they have all of their documentation and keep fielding different cars. we have got to get more organized like they are (the club has more than 13,000 members!). i know a bunch of them and they have a pretty friendly rivalry going with the yenko boys (you got to respect the guy who beats you right?) but none of them have any use for fords at all. hawkrod |

Dang those rules are tough on us. My '66 7 Litre tires are a joke. A 7.75-15 won't do anything but go up in smoke. I used to burn rubber through two gears until I went to a wrinkle wall drag tire. |
| | | RE:Rules & tires? -- Mike McQuesten, 02/27/2002
Very interesting rules. Especially the tire/wheel limitations.
So what are you planning to run on the '68 Cougar GTE Royce? Were the stock '68 GTE whhels (the Merc Coug styled steels?) 6"? 6.5"? or 7"? X 14, right? G70 X 14 Firestone Wide Ovals! Whoa, will you light those up? Or wait, radials did become an option in '68? And it does say that new style radials are welcome.

I was there with Shoe and seen the Studes kick butt, so i have a 427 Fairlane with the 5 1/2" wheels, we checked tires, the cars that seemed to get out of the hole the best had redline radials, you can run radials as replacement tires, but at the stock size, ill have to try a set to see how it goes, hope to make it soon |
| | | | | RE:Rules & tires? -- Travis Miller, 02/28/2002
Time to practice. Don't laugh, this works.
Wet the street in front of your house and practice taking off. Once you learn the art of taking off on the dampened street, you can launch a musclecar with narrow OEM tires on the dragstrip. Racers in the 60's with high powered S/S cars drove off the starting line by feathering the gas pedal.
Also try adding air to the rear tires instead of letting them down. You get a better footprint. |

Yea, I believe that the 385 series Cougar is the rarest of them all -- only 448 made of any style. Mine is a plain vanilla (literally!) hardtop of which there were only 9 made with automatics -- only 2 in the registry.
The GTE has been on my list of "I want one of those" for as long as I can remember. It wil be great to get to see one run.

| C1ME-A Truck Block -- Ted Young, 02/27/2002
I have a 360 (or 361- I am not sure) C1ME-A truck block out of an early 70's ford truck. I was told that some of these blocks have heavier main webbing and can be overbored to the 428 bore size. Is this one of those blocks? If so, I would like to use it in my Galaxie.

| 390 in T-Bird -- Steve, 02/27/2002
I have purchased a rebuilt 1967 390 that is rated at 280 HP it currently has a two barrel. I plan to install a 600cfm Holley four barrel and shorty headers. The question I have is, what would you reccomend for an intake manifold. My car a 1960 Thunderbird weighs 3800 lbs has an auto transmission and a 3.00 rear end ratio. I assume I need all the torgue I can get. Thanks for your help |
| | RE: 390 in T-Bird -- Mike McQuesten, 02/27/2002
Edelbrock Performer. From my personal experience, this intake provided a lot of low end torque. It's designed to do what it seems you want to do. You will need to use the '65 & later style valve covers since there is no provision for adding oil through this intake. |
| | RE: 390 in T-Bird -- CincyEd, 02/27/2002
Better check the clearance for the shorty headers in the 60 Bird (if you're using the stock Ford shorties).....Engine compartment is narrow and the steering box is very close to the block.....Ford Powertrain Applications makes a nice custom header for the 352/390 that fit nicely in the 60 Bird whether manual or power steering...I'm installing a set right now in my 60.....Good luck, Ed |
| | | RE: 390 in T-Bird -- Steve, 02/27/2002
Ed, The headers I am going to buy, are from Ford Powertraine...I think that is the only place you can get headers for the old Squarebirds. I saw their photo on their web page and they look like a quality product. I would be interested as to how they fit and of course how they perform. I will not be ordering mine for about a month as I do not have my new engine yet. Thanks for the help.
Mike, thanks for the info on the intake manifold I will be ordering the Performer. |
| | | | RE: 390 in T-Bird -- Mike McQuesten, 02/27/2002
I'd just assumed that you meant an after market shorty headers like FPA offers. CincyEd is right on with the fact that the HP/Interceptor header style cast iron Ford manifolds won't fit in the birds.
Again, I think you'll be happy with the E-brock Performer. It sounds like you're going to just up-grade the rebuilt 390-2V without a cam change, etc. So it'll work well with a 600 Holley(if that Holley is in good shape). |
| flexplate/tranny question -- luke, 02/27/2002
I have a 1965 galaxie which originally had a 390. I switched out the 390 for a 428cj, but have been getting some vibration in the engine. The flexplate is the balanced model intended for the 428. Does the flexplate for the 428 that I have only work with a c6 tranny, because I'm pretty sure my galaxie has a Fmx. Is there a flexplate out there for a 428 and the fmx, or do I need to find myself a c6? |
| | RE: flexplate/tranny question -- Mike McQuesten, 02/27/2002
Yes, I'm pretty sure that you're correct that your '65 has a MX/Cruisomatic. Obviously you've got the car starting and running. I believe the external balance flexplate you have for your 428 is correct and I believe this flexplate works fine with a '65 cruiso. The ring gear tooth count is the same for '65 & later....I think? Must be okay because your starter is engaging and starting, right?
A vibration can be from many areas. It might be the engine. You say it's in the engine? It's sure hard to tell via talking on the internet. It might be the transmission? It might be the driveshaft/U-joints?
I think you might be wise to have a couple of professional opinions provided by people who can look, listen and drive your '65 in person. |
| | C6 flexplate does not work well on an FMX. -- Dave Shoe, 02/27/2002
The C6 tranny will fit the FMX, but it may damage the front tranny pump because the C6 flexplate has a different offset stamped into it. This may also place extra force on the engines thrust bearing at the #3 main. I've only read about the offset in Ford documentation - I haven't studied it yet, and I don't know what the offset differential between the two is.
The 410/428 never got an FMX, so you can be sure if it's an offset-balanced FE flexplate it's for a C6.
Can you tell us more about the engine? Are you certain it's a 428?
Shoe. |
| | | RE: C6 flexplate does not work well on an FMX. -- hawkrod, 02/27/2002
i just looked this up in the ford parts book and a C6 and a C/M use the same flexplate for a 390, so as long as you have the correct 428 flexplate there should be no problem. there may be specific years/models where this is not so but as far as 65 and newer is concerned ford only had one flexplate for the cruiso and the C6 behind the 390 so the offset on a 428 flexplate should be the same. the flexplate part number is a C5AZ-6375-D which would indicate that the 64 and older are different. hawkrod |
| | | | RE:what I thought too. -- Mike McQuesten, 02/27/2002
Always lookin' to learn. So I went out this evening and gathered up a few old flexplates nicely stored in the back of FE parts storage unit #2(or is it #1?), '67 Big Merc Wagon. The only standard FE non 428 flexplates I have out in the open and still not sandwiched betwixed old cruisos/engines are '65 later. And I have two used '28 plates, one NOS. So I took one of the old 390 plates that came from a '65 Merc 390/cruiso combo. Held it up to one of the old 428 plates. Other than the obvious visual differences that the 428 plate offers, i.e., wagon wheel style cutouts and external weights, there was no visual differences in the flange holes alignment.
The '64 & earlier flexplates/flywheels definitely have a different ring gear tooth count.
But my mind is totally open to further information and instruction.
|
| | | | | RE:what I thought too. -- SDP, 02/27/2002
Heres my experiance with this. On a 65 I had years ago, I swapped the Cruiso for C6 and used the Cruiso flexplate with the C6 for many years without a stich of trouble. I just went out to the garage like Mike and I happen to have a 28 'aftermarket' flexplate lying around and comapared it to a 65 Cruiso plate thats lying around and I cannot see any apparent differance in the two other than the obvious weight on the 28 plate. | | | | | | I'm still not sure. -- Dave Shoe, 03/02/2002
My only concern relates to this technical service bulletin.
I now know the FE-C6 flexplate is available in both the spoked and non-spoked variety, but I still don't understand why a 400M would have problems with the mix-match between FMX and C6 and an FE wouldn't.
The text mentioned the flexplate offset was different.
Someday I'll follow up with measurements.

I did not see this. Thanks for the alert. If the price doesn't go nuts, I'm gonna be bidding on these once at the end.
It sounds like a Kinko's copy, not an original "made at Ford" original blueprint. I'm OK with that. I'm just an info hound.
I wonder if the seller plans to sell more copies? I wonder whether the high bidder will?
Also, these appear to be the engine plant machining prints, not the foundry prints. I'd be interested in finding the foundry prints someday, too.
Thanks for the notification. I'm pretty swamped getting my office set up these days, so I haven't had much time to watch ebay.
