And it sounds like it's time for an overhaul.

If you need spark plug extensions to keep it running, you need to overhaul. JMO, but you're only biding your time with those things.

3 years is alot of time for a gasket to go bad. Especially considering they can go bad in 3 days, or 3 months, or 30 years. There's no guarentee that you're going to get a full life of service out of any engine component, just the faith you put in the quality of the brand.

Not to say that's what's wrong, but if you're getting lots of white smoke, you're getting water in the combustion chambers. Maybe a cracked head, or high up in the cylinder. You don't have to have water in the oil, or vice-versa, for there to be a cracked block or bad gasket. That's just a good sign.

By all means, do it yourself as a class project, that is the best way to learn. I hope your instructor is well experienced and not biased against Fords. Be sure you do a complete diagnosis of the existing problem so you can be sure to address that as you go along. This seems like the kind of board that you can get realistic advice on while doing this job. Keep us posted on your progress as I'm sure there are many here that would like to see/hear how you are doing with it. The finished engine will be a source of great pride when you are driving your car again. Get a cheap camera and take pix as you go through the rebuild, you will enjoy them for years to come.

I'd inspect it real close and find the cause. Water burners and overheaters sometimes are not worth rebuilding. I'd have every nook and crannie checked for cracks. Hate to see you have the same problem after rebuilding it.

P.S. The manifolds that came bolted to these heads out of the mustang had casting #'s of C8OE
GT heads. Or setup for it. -- Paul M, 08/17/2001
But I didn't know truck manifolds wouldn't bolt up. Makes sense, I guess.

Highly doubt they came off a 428 *Mustang* though.
Only 428 I know of in a Mustang was the CJ, and it had 16 bolt holes, not 14. Casting # was C8OE-N.

What you have are lo-po heads, drilled to hold GT exhaust manifolds so the engine would fit in a Mustang. With a lot of porting and CJ sized valves, they could make good high-compression heads, but you'ld be closing in on the price of a set of Edelbrocks, if not exceeding it.
RE: 390 heads ID -- Mel Clark, 08/17/2001
Those must be for a 390 GT, the casting number is correct and the exhaust bolt pattern is also correct. The same heads were used on Galaxies but with the vwertical bolt pattern only. The casting number for the 428CJ isC8AE 6090 J. My source is Shop Tips, March 1968

RE: flow numbers -- Mel Clark, 08/18/2001
There should be an improvement but there could be some problems also. Any time major mods are done to the intake or exhaust ports a flow bench should be used. First to establish a baseline of what the heads flow stock as well as any variation between cylinders. There is no way to guess what the results of the work performed are without a flowbench.
Back in the early '60s when Ford was doing a lot of research in cylinder head design they published a paper with the S.A.E. which detailed the efforts and relults of many modifications in the combustion chambers, intake and exhaust ports as well as valve head design. In this paper the described how the removal of as little as .010 from some areas could disrupt the flow charecteristics enough to cause a loss of airflow of as much as 10% with a corresponding loss of horsepower. This paper further stated that the 427 H.R. engine produced 540 HP while the 427 M.R. engine produced 539 HP and that was the reason for the demise of the H.R. engine in Ford's race program. It's too bad they didn't eliminate the light weight valves at the same time. IMNSHO :)

You need 390 mounts.
And reinforcements for the shock towers.
And a new suspension (springs, I believe).
And a new bellhousing and Z-bar and clutch linkage
(if it's a manual trans)
Or a whole new tranny (if it's an auto trans).
And GT or CJ exhaust bolt patterns on the heads.
And a new radiator, with appropriate hoses, fan, etc, etc.
And lots of time.
And lots of patience.

Am I forgetting anything else, guys?? (probably am, as I wouldn't attempt it myself)

JMO.
RE: Save Headaches -- Mel Clark, 08/18/2001
Paul is giving you the best advice. There are a lot of differences in these cars. The spring/shock towers are first to come to mind, the '68 and up are reinforced when installing the 390 and larger engines, They also have torque boxes built into the chassis and the suspension is much more beefy. Get a 390 car if you want that power system. Also the differential is more able to live for a while.

Most Mustang parts outlets have the CJ two piece mounts. They are reproduced. Need to be modified if you use the early two bolt blocks.

I swapped a 428 into a 67 Mustang that came with a 289. Here's what I had to change...

- motor mounts. The frame mounts were the same in 67, but I think they changed in 68. I don't have a clue what they were like in 69

- The radiator is different, but you may be able to make the 302 radiator work. Check which sides the hoses connect. You'll also need a "good" radiator, 'cause it takes more to cool a 390 than a 302.

- The exhaust is all different, so plan on getting FPA headers and all new exhaust tubing. You could run manifolds, but why?

- I have 650# front coil springs, and I like them. I think the 289 springs were something like 470#.

- I have the export brace and monte carlo bar, plus I welded a plate inside the shock tower (the spring side). I also have Global West upper and lower A-arms, but they weren't necessary for the FE.

- You have to watch the sway bar. I had a small block 1" bar and the oil filter hit it. I think there's an FE specific sway bar, but I also had a remote oil filter hookup, so I just used that.

- The trans is different. If you're running a C-6, you should be okay. If you're running a 4-speed, you'll need an FE specific bellhousing, Z-bar, throwout arm, plus the brackets that mount on the frame and block for the Z-bar. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy a scattershield and adapt a cable clutch.

- Don't forget all the accessories on the front of the engine. You may need to buy brackets, etc. for the alternator, power steering, air conditioning (assuming you have air or p/s - I don't).

It actually isn't that hard of a swap - motor mounts, exhaust, trans at a minimum. Preferrably an upgrade to disc brakes and springs, monte carlo bar, export brace. The biggest problem is the expense. Expect to pay $500 for headers, $300 for clutch linkage, ~$300 for motor mounts, ?? for trans.

I can't think of anything else, so I'll shut up.

8. Finally, its not an absolute requirement, but you should change to a 9 inch rear. The 8 inch is pretty strong, but posi's and gears are harder to find. Axles are the same, so if you can find a housing for a Mustang and a 1/2 ton truck center section you'll get out cheaper as long as you make sure your new center section is 28 spline you can use your current axles.

The bottom line, it isnt cheap when you add everything up, but there isnt anything really complicated, or anything horribly expensive, if you search the junkyards for all you can. The biggest indicidual cost is probably the headers. FPA's are easier to install, but Hoker makes nice ones too. I run Hookers

I did the same thing, I took a 302 AT 70 Fastback and put a 427, 4 speed big in/out CJ tranny, and 9 inch combo. I found an a/c Galaxie for all the accessories so I could keep my a/c ( compressor not on in this picture) but you can check it out below

You can put a big block into a car not prepped for it but you will need to keep a close eye on the potential trouble spots and this is a major one.

I think Carroll Shelby once said "Anything will fit into anything with enough time and money" car wise anyway.
RE: Its not bad -- Ross, 08/19/2001
Mel, I certainly agree its a good idea to brace the shock towers, and if you look I did say so in the post. As with your other posts, you are right on the money. I have seen and repaired those type of cracks, and they can be bad, even on small block cars. Matter of fact, my 302 AT car had just started when I braced it for the 427.

However, I do point out that the "anything will fit" quote doesnt really apply to this one IMHO. We are talking putting an FE in a body exactly as Ford did, and a body that is designed for the FE, with reproduction parts still available to complete the job.

Everything you said is spot on, reinforce it, but its not a butcher job, and it shouldnt be looked at that way. Its a bolt in swap, maybe not a SBC-type swap, but a bolt in with all factory parts just the same. Ford's later improvements were a learning curve we benefit from now, so we brace and drive off with the FE powered cars for a bit longer.

In my opinion, excepting maybe a sloppy S-code coupe, I'd rather see someone build an FE powered 302 car, experiment to his last breath and run the heck out it, save the CJ's, Bosses and Shelbys for resto or at least someone with more experience.

Bottom line, its not a tough swap, but you just need the right parts, most (not all) readily available

390 standard bore is 4.05". 428 standard bore is 4.13". I haven't heard of too many blocks capable of taking a .08 overbore, but why bother? Other tricks to improve breathing and exhaust can wring a lot of performance out of a 390 without risking block integrity.

The "K" code in 1969 indicates a 429 2V engine, I don't believe there were any 1969 Mustangs produced in that configuration, I could be wrong though. My source is Shop Tips October 1972. I think I would run from this deal.
RE: If you like it make a offer! -- Nostrodomas, 08/21/2001
If the body is great and you want the car! I say it an't no K code, and their is no way to verify a 428CJ it's misrepresented and I'd offer you (how ever much you are willing to spend). Really any car is only worth how much a person is willing to spend. The only problem is the rich nerd drive the prices up when the spend a outrages prices for cars at auction, which most probably get screwed.

Duplicolor makes three Ford blues. Which is correct for a 1969 428CJ Ram Air cleaner? I used a dark blue but it looks too dark.

..and Ditzler is still selling paint.

It's rare that any paint company doing business back in 1969 hasn't been bought out, converted into something else, and then bankrupted in order to make the owners a buncha bucks in the "churning" process, but Ditzler/PPG is still with us, and you can still buy the (three?) various "blues of Ford" found on FEs of different years. Don't settle for that "light blue" or "dark/corporate blue" spray can junk. Those all seem to be generic colors. There really does exist that rich middile blue color you seek (but can't find in aerosol form), and Ditzler apparently sticks pretty darned well to your block (unlike that aerosol crap).

Super Ford (R.I.P.) has often written about the proper Ditzler paints to use, and they even speak of the proper engine compartment black in the various paint articles, too. When I get the time I positively WILL post info on the paint specifics.

 RE: Antifreeze belching 428 -- gerry, 08/16/2001
Since you gave sparse details, it's difficult to say if you have a problem or not, Jim. I'm going to have to rely on your assumption that the block and heads are fine and that your cooling system is performing adequately since you didn't write of any overheating.

If your car is purging coolant, you most likely have the radiator over-filled. In non-sealed systems, you do not fill the coolant to the top of the radiator. As the system heats up, the coolant expands and can open the pressure valve in the cap. When you shut the engine down, it goes into heat-soak and will slightly boil the coolant and raise the system pressure, which will also open the relief in the cap. Of course, everything could be fine but the cap and it's just not holding rated pressure.

 RE: Antifreeze belching 428 -- Reggie, 08/16/2001
Sounds like a blown head gasket. Had the same problem on a built 351W. Put a stant radiator pressure tester on the radiator. Pump it up to 14lbs and rev the engine. If the pressure increases with RPM - the head gasket is blown

They will fit your C4 heads just fine. -- Dave Shoe, 08/15/2001
Also, these manifolds have oversized ports, so they are compatible with both raised-exit heads and lowered-exit heads.

Beware that you may need to mill the mating surface of the manifold because the log exhaust manifolds often warp a little as the years pass, making a gasket seal impossible.

You will want to be sure the PI log manifolds properly match the existing exhaust pipes, as the pipe diameters can vary, depending on application.

I do know the 428PI cars ran great, so the log manifolds are not bad. They appear to be superior to the 390 unibody exhaust manifolds used in Fairlane and Mustang applications.

Shoe.

I don't know cams very well, let alone Fords original cams, so that's why I was asking.

What kind of specs is it, and by mentioning getting one, I assume it's still available from Ford?
RE: Mel, was that a GT or CJ cam? -- Mel Clark, 08/18/2001
That is the '68 428 CJ (DSO) over the counter cam. The specs are 282*-296*-58* .509 lift. It is just a little bit lumpy in a 390 or 428 and pretty mild in my 447. It will run to 8500 rpm but I can't tell you that it's really making power at that level or flattening off, I just shift as I pass 8,000 rpm. You will have to do some searching to locate that cam as it has not been available from Ford for a lot of years. If I had a dozen or so requests I would have it duplicated at one of the cam grinder shops that I call on in my business. I can tell you that it would cost about $250.00 per cam and possibly a bit more. I think that this cam could be found at some swap meets or at Carlisle in June also the Turkey Trot swap meet at Daytona in the fall. Try it, you'll like it.

RE: Heads I D=What are they worth -- Mel Clark, 08/15/2001
I'm quite certain that you have either Boss 351 or 351 CJ heads. They should have a small combustion chamber. They are very desireable to many Mustang restorers or racers. I think you should put them on eBay with at least a $500.00 reserve, maybe more but you should first have them checked for cracks and have them cleaned and painted Ford blue to get top money.
