my gas tank has been repaired more than once for leaks and it's started again. I'm wondering if I should buy a rebuilt one or try to fix the original. I suspect the leaks come from the worn shocks and coils . Everytime I get over a bump or dip in the road to fast the car hits the ground, and most likely the gas tank hit's the ground as well and reopens the leak.

You are riding around in a death trap! In Florida I saw a gas tank fall out from underneath an old motorhome. The poor old couple died almost instantly. PLEASE, don't drive till ya get it fixed! |

No, I thought the same thing when I saw the leak. The car is in my garage space now minus the gas tank, fuel line, intake manifold, motor mounts, tranny mount, alternator, water pump, etc etc.
What do you guys think though? Should I try to fix the gas tank I have or try and get a new one?

After market fuel tanks can be found easly and are fairly inexspensive, don't cut corners when it comes to saftey the life you save may be your own! Money well spent mcj67 |

I bought a new gas tank for my 67 Galaxie last year for $91 at Advance Auto Parts. The manager gave me $25 off the list price, at least that is what he told me. But trying to find a new sending unit, the only place I have found that had one wanted $250. Yikes! |

You have a suspension problem according to your post, not a gas tank problem. Unless you fix the suspension first you'll be grinding up the new gas tank also.
Step one, fix the suspension. Step two, get a new gas tank.

While deleting unwanted files, I stumbled upon this shot I took at last year's SAAC. Pretty, isn't it?

I presume this is - as advertised by the valve covers - a 427. And I further presume its decoration is representative of engines used in the "new" series of 427 Cobras....cars about which I know little, except that a generous amount of legal stink has recently been raised in their behalf.
Something tells me that's the real reason I'm posting this, now. Yours truly is no sentamentalist, but this photo puts me in mind of simpler times and happier days. Its a shame the good taste & restraint evident in this engine's appearance isn't shared by Mr Shelby's legal department. ;-)

BTW I know you have lots of pictures of various motors and things; wonder if you might have some pictures of that ole anchor the 427 SOHC? I printed a really nice one off the net two summers ago and like an idiot I didn't capture it on my HD. Now I'd like to use it in something I'm doing and it appears the site is no longer up.
Can you help? Anybody else? E-mail to save bandwidth if necessary.

dog-eat-dog attitude of some businessfolk.
Legal precedent rules, but it doesn't always conform to popular wisdom. And, after all, holders of patents and/or trademarks can't be denied their due. I just
wish cooler heads would prevail in this matter, before the average
enthusiast is alienated more than he has been.

My sincere apologies for not getting back to this board sooner. I want to thank those of you who posted pictures and contacted me via e-mail.
Mr. F, I would never use your pictures without permission or credit; my project is just for myself.
I won't enter into the debate on Shelby but unfortunately I tend to agree with those who feel that the whole situation reflects poorly on the man. Given the same senario I would probably contact those people who were doing such a good job creating replicas and ask them how they would like to work on a new project. What do you want to bet, given a free hand and proper guidelines, they could deliver a superior product, under cost, and on time? And what do you want to bet they would jump at the chance?
Shelby use to lament the fact that his projects were killed by the Ford "bean counters". It appears he has become one.

envy of those manufacturers who can actually produce and deliver a car on time, on budget and working. Shelby has tried to produce his own versions, and has had nothing but problems and delays. This had made the competitor in him mad and so he flails out at those who daily demonstrate that they CAN do it better, using his own design.
He wants to force bad quality down enthusiasts throats at exhorbiant (sp?) prices. He thinks this is still the 60's, that he can be an American Ferrari and ship cars to the penis-shy that don't run, don't keep water out and last all of 5,000 before needing a major overhaul.
I understand that if you buy one of his blocks, that it will need in the neighborhood of $1,500 of machining/rework to make usable; I KNOW that he has delivered his rocker systems mis-assembled, that he has shipped 'new' oil pumps with 'bad spring' still written in marker on the bottoms, and doesn't make what he says he will.
The guy is a salesman, not a producer. He should let the doers make his cars and just collect some sort of royalty on their fine work instead of whining about how they're ruining the market for HIS crappy product. |

Its a double edged sword. While participating in a show with a section dedicated to Shelby I had the opportunity see a new fuel injection setup that Shelby team had engineered and was manufacturing. It was beautiful and used modern injectors. The price for this manifold and injector set up was in the area of $10,000.
He is sueing Factory Five for gobs of money for making a cobra kit that they sell for $10,000 complete less paint and drive train! You can have a very nice replica for under 20k when its all said and done. Yet Shelby's new Cobras cost close to 100K.
I like the Man and the contributuion he has made, my 67 Shelby 500 is my passion, but I also know that he had very little input to the car overall. Carrol is also very tight with his money and would never pay the kind of money for a car that his company charges. |

Oh, about the $10K FI setup. Kinsler did mine for under $3K...aluminum tunnel ram manifold, injectors, throttle bodies, linkage, TPS, IAC and all.
More overpriced crap coming it sounds like.
And what about the products Shelby promises but never delivers? The DOHC FE heads; the dry sump system; and now we can all turn blue waiting for his overpriced FI.
I have heard some wild things about Pro-Stock Paul of Prostock Engineering, but I'm starting to think Shelby is even wilder/wierder.

I'm not a shelby owner and I seem to be getting dragged deeper and deeper into this discussion. I have bought and used Shelby FE pieces, but other than that I'm only aware of what they're up to lately because they are a source for FE parts (and not the only source), I really don't care about them all that much, especially since they have not be a QUALITY source.
Anyway...
As for my prior comment, isn't shelby the one who found some old chassis' or unused VIN's laying around his shop and is trying to get these 'layovers' titled as 1965's (or thereabouts)?

yes the guy did pull out old nos frame with 65 vin on them. and is seeling these cars as 65.what the hell i would to, but ever buyer is told that up front. he is also donating ALL PROFITS FOR THOOSE CARS TO HIS CHILDRENS HEART FOUNDATION, that is a well known fact.the way i see it that alone gives him all the bragging rights in the world. as far as sueing force five the were given the same offer as every-one else in the kit car market was if you want to use my name pay a royalty like every one else.(which part of that also goes to the CSCHF).COBRA is his name, it was never licensed to ford.if it had been would Ford let any one use it? shebly has always held copy right to the name cobra , even while living in south africa. Shelby sold the COBRA name to Ford after original Cobra production ceased in 1967. Since then numerous Ford vehicles and engines have carried the name.
You may be thinking of the G.T. 350 designation. Shelby still technically owns that and when Ford put it on its "20th Anniversary" Mustangs in '84 there was a big stink. I think that was settled by Ford licensing the name from Shelby. |

In my opinion of what I read, which may or may not be true cause when you read something is the opinion of the author based on their facts and asumptions. Mr. Shelby was bullheaded and if it wasn't done his way he didn't want to do it. He admitted in a TV interview that he got feed up and left ford. I agree ford made some mistakes, but as every working man knows everybody got a boss and most of the time, no, nearly all the time they do things their way. BY 66 Ford allready had the preformance package (427) all shelby did after success with the 260 was struck the power train in a English AC Sprint and called it a cobra. Now, with that kind of preformance Ford jumped on the band wagon. Both parties made mistakes and really suffered for it. Why didn't Mr. Shelby stick a Mark V 427 in the AC sprint? My opinion ford had the more powerful and dependable engine, transmission, and rearend, and that engine (my opinion) is still the benchmark for preformance. At least Ford let Shelby put his name on their Mustang. Most men would of been would of been grateful, but some get swelled heads. Bottom line, it was Ford power that made the names...This is all based on my asumptions, worth absolutly nothen.... RC |

I thought that they clearly labeled them as replicas. I think it was the buyers/builders who were putting on 'cobra' nameplates they purchased from other sources, including ford. Heck, shelby himself sells cobra decals, etc to put on your fresh-built replica.
The guy is just out-of-it.

I respect the man too, and love the cars that bares his name and only dream of a real 66 AC cobra 427. Any car nut respects the power of that car, or any car with the 427. Lets face it Race cars had no warranty, I don't think you can say it wasn't a quality product. No other manufacture offered a R car with a warranty that I can remember. AS for the Shelby Mustangs they were great also. I seen 67 and 68s GT500 with 427s, was these cars factory installed or did someone swap out the 428s? As far as the new old cobra's. I think they will sell on the name alone. I too am scheptical if he can sell them as 65 models. But, I don't know the kit car laws. |

In 67 it is said less than 6 GT500's got the 427 motor from the factory.Some of the Shelby Dealers offered it as a Dealer-Installed option.In 68 Shelby American/A.O Smith was not set up to do this from the factory so any car with a 427 would have been dealer or owner installed.Factory or dealer paper work is the only way to support the claim of an original installation of the 427. |

It was a typical Hollywood feature: a car theme to attract the guys; add a girl for love interest to draw in the women and to up the "conflict;" toss in a couple of lame car chases; blow up a boat or two; salt liberally with sterotyped bad guys . . . ho-hum!
I gave it one-and-a-half tire irons.
Good car movies? Well, lets start with "Bullitt" and then as the second movie in our double-feature presentation we'll see "The French Connection."
THOSE were chase scenes!! Nowadays all they do is run the car about a half a mile then blow it up. Whoop-di-do. |

what he has is a limited # of 1965 chassis and bodys that are original 65 pieces they have been stored in a warehouse since 65. in order to have cobras sanctioned for racing he had to produce something like 500 cars. the chassis & bodys were built and numbered but were never assembled. what he did was store the parts and told the racing officals that the cars were sold, therefor the cobra was now race sanctioned. road & track did a big story a few years back we he admitted to what he had done. he does sell a fiberglass copy just like everybody else. i think the vin#'s are something like csx4000 and up or someting. but those are not the ones he is selling as 65's. the aluminum bodied steel chassis units that were put in storage in 65 are what is being sold as a 1965. and if i remember right he said he was only selling off one or two originals a year.im not sure but i think this came to light about 10 or 15 years ago when when cobras were at top dollars, and people were trying to document then that they noticed that a lot of vin# were missing and could not be accounted for. least wise thats the way i remember the article. |

Even the aluminum-bodied version of the '65 VIN cars he's selling is made by a Polish kit company. There was nothing stored away in some dusty warehouse. These are new cars with old paperwork.
And I'd like an updated definition of 'kit' car. We can buy preassembled 'Cobras' from ERA and FFR and Shelby himself, all of whom follow the big 3's manufacturing model of designing and outsourcing part production (foraging) with final assembly and sales happening in-house. Instead of 'kit' manufacturers, aren't they really simply 'low-volume' manufacturers?
Shelby is just p.o'ed that Saleen, FFR and ERA can produce their cars better, more efficiently and at a lower price-point than he can. |

Thank you! I was begining to think that everyone one this subject was a friggin' moron! I went to the auction that they had a few years ago, and saw the piles of chassis (no body parts,) that were stored there. These are all registered 60's cars! The fact that they aren't built is irrelevent!!!! It would be no diferent than someone puting replacement sheetmeatel on a 65 mustang, or putting a 68 motor in a 63 Galaxy! Think about it you idiots! the "ORIGINAL" Cobra was an A.C. Ace, that a smallblock was installed in! He approached Chevy before Ford! But Ford powered Cobras are the legend! Does anybody ever question when those A.C's were built? The company (A.C.) was going out of business!!!! the "ORIGANAL" cars were Ace's that had the engines pulled out of unsold inventory cars, and shipped to Carrol! ... Never mind! What sort of times will it do?
I have a 1968 GT390 FB Mustang, 750 double pumper carb, holley street dominator intake, hooker headers with flowmasters, 270H Comp cam, C6 gear box with 9” LSD and 3.5:1 gears, running standard 10.5:1 compression.
I’ve just fitted the 3.5:1 diff gears, it was running 3.00’s. On the standard 14” wheels and street tires it ran 13.8 second ¼ miles @ around 99mph.
I have since bought some 15” x 10” wheels with hoosier (sticky) tires and fitted 3.5 diff gears. What times should I expect now?

This is a bit like 'how long is a piece of string?' but I would expect anything from a few tenths to half a second at the strip for both changes. Next thing you know you'll be chasing 12's 'cos you'll be getting close. Sounds like a nice car. Any pics for us? HTH

I’m thinking of upgrading my worn out standard factory distributor with the MSD 8549 billet version mated to the MSD 6AL box. This MSD dizzy don’t have vacuum advance. Do I need it for my car? 1968 GT390 FB Mustang, 750 double pumper carb, holley street dominator intake, hooker headers, 270H Comp cam, C6 gear box with 9” LSD and 3.5:1 gears, running standard 10.5:1 comp.

No, you don't need the vacuum advance on your car but you will probably lose a couple of mpg by losing it and if your fuel costs in Oz are anything like here in the UK, it's a worry. Try to get a decent fast curve in the new distributor if it hasn't already got one and the mpg loss will be minimised as well as maximising performance. HTH

I'm finishing the job someone else started on a 390. Have rounded up most of the parts but still need the following items:
Head Bolts (Long) 1
Head bolts (Short) 10
Crankshaft oil slinger 1
Eccentric, Camshaft to fuel pump 1
Rod, Camshaft to fuel pump 1
Parts were lost during move or something. Any leads? Anyone out there with extras?

| Any experience with Rhoades Lifters? -- R.C.V, 09/30/2000
This is partially FE related. I have FE cars but I also have a Boss 429 which I need advise on. I am changing a bad cam and lifters and discovered that Crower sent lifters for a 429/460 and the Boss engine uses FE lifters (discovered too late also). I have to get this engine together and running by Monday for Cruisin the Coast on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, so I have to work on it tommorrow. My dilema is that I have a set of standard FE lifters and a set of Rhoades FE lifters in my spare parts. I would love to use this opportunity to use the Rhoades lifters since the cam has a lift of 572/586 but are they too noisy? I have never heard an engine with them and, well lets face it, with a modified Boss 9, I can stand a good solid lifter sound. I just dont want a sound that is sloppy. I can use the standard lifters if any of you guys have had a bad experience with Rhoades. I just have to do it in the morning, one way or the other. Thanks, R.C.

RCV, I don't know it this will help you on your 429 or not. I had the same problem with a FE years ago, but it wasn't the lifters it was the push rods. The FE type valve train do not allow any adjustment, if the lash is too loose you have to get a little longer push rod to take up the slack. And of course it the valve don't seat the you have to get a slightly smaller Push rod length. Their is a rocker that will slide on the FE type bar that is adjustable kind like the old Y blocks had. Sounds to me that you have valve train slop. I'm not familiar with the 385 series engines wheather or not they are adjustable or not. And I remember having to pre-oil the lifter so they would pump up. Maybe this will give you some more ideas. RC |
