 RE: Pertronix ignition -- 410cougar, 04/27/2001
this is prob one of the cheapest and most noticlble upgrade you can make. the only negative thing i can possibly say is if it ever breaks down (which odds are very low) its hard to find parts for it in the middle of nowhere. points can be found vertually everywhere. but other then that my milage increase by 4 miles to the gal. which is considerable since i only get 11 when im nice. which is very hard to do.

hi marty,
go for it- got one in my 68 gt 390- great update- next i'll use there coil they have available- years ago(about 5) i installed the unit in my sailboat with the atomic 4 flathead- it's been super ever since. good luck. rick
RE: Pertronix ignition -- richard, 04/29/2001
along with being economical, the unit is reliable and looks factory from the outside. parts are becoming
more widely available as the unit becomes more popular. definately use the coil they have and gap your plugs at .045. you might also consider upgrading your
plug wires as well to a set of spiral wound wires. moroso and msd each make a set.
RE: Pertronix ignition -- bear, 05/01/2001
Bo, backfire thru the carb is usually do to a lean condition, to much timing or a vacuum leak. which i have had all of them.

According to the 1958 Ford shop manual, both the 332 and the 352 got an .026" valve lash on both the intake and exhaust side, and it was the same spec whether the engine was hot or cold.

Want to sell the manual?

They are always available new-repro on ebay for $29.95, and frequently available used for $10-$20.

I always prefer the used stuff, but you're pretty much guaranteed the repros won't stink like some of the old books can. Avoid the CD versions and go for the paper.

RE: I need help on identifying these heads. -- Dave Shoe, 04/26/2001
If they belong to an FE, I'm certain they are either C6AE-R (66-67 only) or C8AE-H (68-71 only) castings.

What car did they come out of, and did the center two cylinders leave the lower exhaust manifold holes undrilled? Also, are the top exhaust manifold holes for cyls 1 and 4 offset downward about 5/16" when compared to the normally positioned top holes at cyls 2 and 3?

What's the date code near the center of the head by the valve springs?

CJ heads would have a different "production part number" and a different "service replacement number", but since these numbers are never stamped on the head, it's not really worth identifying them with anything but the casting number.

RE: I need help on identifying these heads. -- Dave Shoe, 04/27/2001
I don't know what kinda heads they are. I haven't ever heard of your casting number, but then I pretty much only know the super-common head casting numbers.

Someone recently posted they had a 12-bolt exhaust manifold pattern - another feature I'd never heard of. It's fun to learn about the variations, especially when the origins of the part is known. What is your set of heads off of?

If you can measure the height of the intake port, the height of the exhaust port, and maybe the distance of the ports to the head gasket surface. That would help dial it in.

 C8ae-r -- Ed Foral, 04/28/2001
The only reference to an engineering number with a C8 and an R suffix I can find is for a FT head.
The book Ford Performance does not mention a
C8AE-R head.
The C6AE-R heads are cast so that the extra bolt holes can be added.
Let's get a casting date on these heads before we go any further in speculating.

RE: header flange -- Mike McQuesten, 04/26/2001
Have you checked with a reputable exhaust repair/building business? A local shop here in remote northwest Spokane, WA, Doc's Muffler, has always been able to use a flange he has in stock. I'm going from memory here but I had the exhaust system on and off my '61 'liner numerous times for engine changes and what I remember is a solid flat flange retainer that squeezed a sealing donut with a tin liner/flange inside that donut. It wasn't fabricated by Doc, it was something he had in stock. This guy does fabricate all kinds of systems for Street Rods, Muscle Cars and classics. So a good, experienced shop should be able to provide you with what you need.

 Ford rated the 427MR at 485HP @ 6000RPM -- Dave Shoe, 04/26/2001
Cool info! The "rear wheel" horsepower numbers of your 10.0:1 version of the MR appear to correlate well with Ford's published "crankshaft" numbers for the MR motor.

The various twin carb 427s were rated at:
427LR 425HP @ 6000RPM
427MR 485HP @ 6000RPM
427HR 540HP @ 6300RPM
427SOHC 657HP @ 8300RPM

Note: The SOHC rating I list is for the "Second Series" Cammer, the first series Cammer "prototype" (as planted in that famous '64 Galaxie) only came in a single carb version. Note that a different Cammer chart I've seen stops at 8500RPM and shows the twin carb Cammer passing through the power peak. Don't consider my writings as "fact" until you see the info from the original source.

Info shown below is available to anyone for $13.51 (includes shipping - $11.51 to members) from www.sae.org in the 21 page "427 SOHC papers written by the designers of the Cammer. SAE paper number is 650497. Delivery about one week. The "8500RPM charts" are not part of this document, and I believe were published by different authors.

Charts below represent the second series Cammer in both single and dual carb configs, as well as the dual carb 427HR.

And its cool how its is from an almost exactly stock (except for lower compression and .030 bore) 427.

There's just one thing I gotta say 'bout this: It's so refreshing to see such a car, being put on the line to do what it was born to do....RUN! Good luck to you Arthur. Have fun, shift hard, don't let up. One more thing..as has been mentioned, you will boil those tires. Hopefully you've got traction devices installed (bars/cal tracs). Otherwise you will wind those leaf springs up and bounce like a jack rabbit.

RE: Carb transmission sync? -- Mike McQuesten, 04/25/2001
Where's the kick down lever/rod system located on your car? Cruisomatics in early sixties Galaxies ran a wonderful system off the bellcrank mounted on the back left side of the intake. There's no need for a kick-down accessory on your E-brock carb. I "think" '65 was when the clunky kick-down rod that ran all the way to the carb came into the picture. Other than making sure your kick-down is working properly there's no other synchronization that I'm aware of. That is if all is working smoothly with the new carb. If there are bogs? hesitations? stumbles? Then you'll have to read that little booklet that came with the carb carefully and tinker a little with metering rods, step up springs and jetting. All of which are very easy to do with the Edelbrock which is little more than the tried and true Carter AFB (Aluminum Four Barrel).

Well, I think you can find those numbers in Steve Christs book or Fords Off Highway Parts book. FYI, I went back and triple checked the stroke cuz I'd done it quickly and sloppily when I bought it from the dealer who said it was a 390 (mostly to make sure it was greater than 3.5) and it came up 3.98 every time. Since I can't read the date boss clearly I guess it would be a 428 or some have speculated a 410. I'll have to pop the heads off toknow for sure.

George's book is packed with errors - perhaps more than any single book I've seen. It's every bit as bad as the infamous "Shelby's Wildlife" by Wallace A. Wyss.

George is obviously a writer, not a Ford engine enthusiast. Without leaving the sparsely worded page you referenced, you can find half a dozen more errors. Without turning the page, you can find a dozen errors. These two pages are mostly picture pages, too. There are not that many words to screw up. The whole book is like this.

You are correct that there was no Edsel foundry, and that blocks don't get "forged", they get "cast". The FE was principally cast in three different foundrys over it's lifespan, DIF, CF, and MCC.

You claim the 352 came before the 361. This is an error. The FE was born in 1958 - the SAME year the MEL was born and the SAME year the Edsel was born - and the FE's first year displacements were 332, 352, and 361. Note the 361 was used both in Edsels and certain Ford cars (this is a piece of trivia). Also note the first-year Edsel only offered FE and MEL motors, no other engine families. At any rate, the FE was used ONLY in Ford cars and Edsel cars from 1958-1960. In 1961, when the E-car (hey, that's what it was called inside Ford) passed away, the engine line-ups at FoMoCo sorta got swished around and the MEL and FE got a new mix of car lines.

Note also that the FE was NOT known to the public as an "FE" back in 1958. This acronym didn't surface until 1970. Most likely, "FE" was the project name while the engine was under development. Someday I hope to learn this for certain. At any rate, the FE was popularly known as the "Interceptor V-8" back in 1958. It didn't matter if it was a 240 horse 332-2V or a 300 horse 352, 1958 was the height of the short-lived "police interceptor" horsepower wars amongst the big-three car makers and Ford marketers stuck the "Interceptor" name onto every FE engine made to capitalize on the hype, even though MEL offered the only police-specific motors at FoMoCo that year. The FE had no police-specific motors the first years. As usual, I've drifted off track.

In summary: FE does stand for Ford-Edsel, George Reid really is a bozo, and you do care about the FE acronym because you just posted on the topic, and even researched some before posting. I post on it because I want someone to show me a solid reason why it does not stand for Ford-Edsel. So far, I have found no reasons other than "some bozo said so".

I do believe Mr Reid's book is a valuable resource for FE enthusiasts (and the great mass of errors do have entertainment value), but you've gotta weigh the information he presents with information from credible sources before you can weed out what is fact and what is fiction.

Ill buy that its not an FE... but what the h* is this engine family? TE (truck engine) LE (Lincoln engine) lol.. did this engine actually come from the Y block even though it looked a heck of alot like it, and by the way.. the valve covers did leak a lot with the ingenious 2 bolts. On a side note, knew someone who put a 332 in a 1934 3 window and pulled the front end up in 1st and 2nd gear.

Hey, the confusion over the 351 Cleveland is likely what forced Ford to come up with formal "engine family" names like FE, MEL, 335, and 385, so there are good sides to the overlaps, too.
